OMG, I just saw a Hammer!!!
I was driving home from school today, and as usual, I was scanning the road for Mercedes. I was driving in stop and go trafic and saw a dark green w124 in front of me. At first glance it appeared to be a normal Benz, but I began to look a little bit closer. What first caught my eye was an AMG badge tagged on the left side of it's trunk. This raised my suspicion and I noticed the duck tailed hood. I thought to myself, could this really be a Hammer?! The rear wheels were enormous and had AMG chrommies on it. I kept on weaving in and out of traffic to get a closer look at it (I was two cars behind it on a one lane road). As I pulled next to the driver who was signaling to turn left, I motioned for him to roll down his window. He was a well dressed business man, and I asked him if it was a Hammer. He said it was, and I asked him where he got it from (stupid question, but I was still in shock). He replied, "Germany", while the cars behind me started to honk. I told him it was beautiful and sped off. I think it was a true Hammer, but I kept on questioning the validity of the car because very few Hammers were produced (I read in a benzsport.com thread a few days ago that there were somewhere around 13 produced). The only thing that made me think it wasn't a true hammer was the blacked out rear tail lenses (these could have been changed from the OEM), and the side "vents" that looked like those of a w124 late model diesel or the new SL. Let me know what you guys think: was it a real hammer or not?
Oh, I am still kicking myself for not giving him the Mercedes Shop address!!! Oh well. Brian

Vents? Where precisely were the vents?
No Hammers came equipped with any sort of vent, near as I can tell and based on the 2 period Hammer sedan articles I have in my library. They had a ducktail spoiler on the trunklid (sometimes molded-on, as a Coupe I've an article on), side sill extensions, and the classic AMG front air dam. And they were quite low. As to wheels, most seem to have come with Aero I style, but with body-colored centers (centres for you blokes out there); the '90 Coupe Hammer I have a review on had chromies, though. Please elaborate on the vents, as perhaps it was some sort of add-on done since Aufrecht, Melcher and the boys had their hands on it. If he turns out to be just a poser, run him off the road the next time you see him

Michael -
From what I remember (all this happened within 30 seconds) the "vents" were about 7 inches long and located on the passenger side around the middle of the body panel. They were located past the door and towards the engine. I have no idea what they could be for, but then again I only got a glimpse of them. I wish I could have seen the car for a longer period of time. Let me know what you think. Oh, I think you can buy the AMG Hammer body kit, but I'm not sure about the ducktailed trunk. I'm still amazed. Brian

The integrated spoiler on the trunklid, to which I referred, looks just like the bolt-on piece but was somehow molded right on.
As to the vents, I really have never seen such a thing, other than the 5 slots forward of the front wheel well on a later W124 diesel (like my '92) So, the mystery continues...

Did you get a look at the exhaust? Two oval chrome tips or factory? If you got a look at the rear of the car and the exhaust didn't catch your eye, you may have been taken by a classic 124, de-badged diesel driver... I've seen more than one.

EuroCoupe -
It had dual oval chromed tips. I know it wasn't a typical 124 because it had the ducktailed trunk. Both of these features immediatly caught my eye when I first saw it - let the mystery continue Brian

Could this have been in Downtown? A RennTech representative told me he had sent out a head gasket for a real Hammer and it was at downtown LA motors getting fixed.

Nope it wasn't in Downtown. It would be interesting if you could find out from the dealership what color hammer they were working on. This could easily solve the mystery. Brian
