M110 camshaft oiling.
Have devised a cover that protects the forward portion of the camshaft carrier, where the timing chain is, so I can run the engine with the valve cover off and not get oil everywhere. My question is how much oil should be coming out of the small holes in the rockers (see photo). The cam lobe has a light coating but I can see nothing coming out of the hole when the engine is running. It just seems awfully dry in there. If I remove any rocker and apply air pressure to the hole in the screw oil spurts out of all the other rocker holes. How much is enough?? I'm getting an intermitent metal on metal chirp that we cannot isolate.
Any info appreciated. |

It should be shooting out of that little hole on the rocker arms at idle. I can remove the the oil cap on my m110 when its running and see the oil shooting out of that hole.
I can try and take a video for you tomorrow if that helps. I hope i can zoom in enough to see it. Most all m110 motors have a loud valve train, its pretty much normal for them to be loud.

Thanks for responding. This noise goes way beyond valve clatter, sounds like birds chirping. Unfortunately it is very intermittent so is driving me nuts. A video would be great help.

Thanks for your responses. A couple of posters on benzworld also said the oil was spraying out of the rocker holes on their engines. We just noticed that the oil pressure gauge is pegged at 45psi no matter the engine speed which, along with the lack of rocker oil, pretty much screams blockage. Have started
removing the camshaft carrier, hopefully it doesn't go any further but did order an upper engine gasket set just in case. Actually there is a small drawing in the 110 manual that shows the rocker hole spraying oil on the cam lobe, something I missed befor. At least with the gauge indication I know the oil pump is working. |

jd:
Prior to stripping the top of the engine, have a look at the oil filter base and the associated parts; relief valve, thermostat if equipped, etc. |

Frank, thanks for the advice. That is where we had decided to look next. Will remove the filter assembly and apply air pressure to the input hole on the block and see if air comes out of the rockers. Hopefully I wasted $80 on a gasket set, if not at least we can keep going.

Later thoughts. Befor I make more work for myself, can you think of a reason I would be getting a pressure reading on the gauge if there were something amiss in the filter?? It is on the output side. This is the old mechanical gauge and I can see the oil come up in the tube to the gauge which is clear.

We'll we solved the blockage problem and found the culprit. Obviously the chain tensioner was incorrectly installed and held the rail against the chain too tightly. Wish I could blame someone else. Have new rail coming and will be a lot more careful installing the tensioner.
