2.3 16 valve 5spd issue

I Recently Serviced the 5spd shifter with a rebuild kit but have now discovered perhaps a deeper internally problem to the 5spd itself,I can get the 3 rods that are now off the shifter from underneath the car to move in their up and back motion and then back to their neutral position but they do not seem smooth ,the one that makes the reverse pattern to first is especially difficult ,is this the synchros that have worn out ?
