Fan is installed and running at 100% speed emergency mode. No Arduino control yet because I did not get my F@#$%^ing wires. This fan sucks so hard its actually spinning the front aux fan. I have an 80 amp fuse installed at the moment. That will need to be replaced with a 100amp, which I still need to order.

Got the fan running yesterday but unfortunately it it would only run at 100% emergency mode.
I got to take a look at it today and found the problem. Turns out the PWM connector I had repaired due to it being so frail was not fully seated. Plugged it in and all was perfect. Unfortunately it will be a couple of months before I can really test it. But it does come on to the first speed at about 85°C as programed and also comes on to the first speed with the AC turned on also as programed. Bad news is the connector is too flimsy. I need to find something else and of course that means making a new box. Not too bad all. Another one should be doable for < $50. Glade I didn't solder in the Arduino. But finding suitable connectors is hell.

New connectors came in yesterday along with a new Arduino Board. Soldered up the board installed the new connectors. Put it in the car and nothing worked. Took it out to test this morning and found the new board didn't work. After a couple of hours of scratching my head and my balls, I realized I never programed the new board. DUH, programmed the board and now all is working perfectly. New connectors are working for the moment but almost suck as bad as the old ones. These definitely need to go, as I'm not expecting them to hold up too long. Unfortunately that will require a redesign of the board and box as new ones made for larger wire have a bigger pin spacing. Not terribly expensive or hard to do but it does take time.
Today I took it out but with the temperature at 62°F its hard to evaluate. Just ran at about 92°C, which is about 5°C above the thermostat opening temp for the M120 engine. Well at leas Samson is back on the road.

Thanks for all your help with this. This one was very difficult task only because of the space constraints. But putting one into a stock 107 using a 203 style fan would be a piece of cake. I'm sure most of the other MB stock configurations would be just as easy. I have already found that the early 129 115 amp alternator will bolt right onto the M117 engine with just a pulley swap. That should be enough to power the fan since running at 100% should be the exception. Now I just need to wait until July for a proper test.

This question comes after "is it plugged in"? Glad to hear the progress. -CTH |

If I'm back up to Long Island with it, I will stop by.

With fan clutches failing in my 500SE, I'm looking at going electric fan for it as well. But I may do the M113 swap first. I'm over CIS, and the auto that loves shifting into 3rd at 15mph.

As is your reply. My post still mentions the fact that I will likely consider an electric fan as in most applications the M113 did not feature a clutch fan. Why the blatant disrespect in return? Regardless, the fact of the matter is that replacement fan clutches for various MBs of this era are subject to poor quality, meaning that replacing a fan clutch every year is not feasible. This means that even those of us with 126-chassis cars may need to consider an electric fan for future use, especially when retaining the stock motor as that means the clutch fan will have to make way. Let's not forget that Duxthe1 is the original poster of this thread. Your presence here is entirely gratuitous. See yourself out.

I fail to see any disrespect. And yes this is Mr. Duxthe1 thread. I hope he didn't see any either.
But be nice.

To the top of Grandfather Mountain
If you recall back when I started this project it all became necessary after installing AC in the car. A test drive last year up the 6700' Mt Mitchel in 95°F day with AC on, sent the temp soaring to 130°C on the gauge. Yesterday I finally had a reasonably warm 80°F day. Took a 300 mile round trip to Grandfather mountain NC. ~ 5700' OAT 70°F at the summit of Grandfather mountain. Temperature gauge showing 100°C. I estimate the fan to be running at about 50% to 60% which corresponds to a radiator temp of 94°C to 97°C. Looks like everything is working according to plan. The M120 engine thermostat opens at 87°C instead of 82° of the stock 560SL. The highest temperature I saw was not climbing the mountain, but on a stretch of highway NC421 that ascended at a good angle for about 5 miles. I could get really rapid high HP assents at `70-80MPH up that stretch and saw ~ 105°C. Not sure if increasing the fan speed will reduce those temps at that point as the high speed is probably primary for cooling at that point. Today's testing was also done top down AC off. So that's another thing keeping things cool. There may be some tweaking to do with fan speeds, but I believe I am ready for Mt Mitchel. And then maybe Mt Washington if I get up to NH.
