m119.960 119.970 parts interchangeability?

I've been gathering parts for a while now for the ultimate goal of a m119 powered w111 220b. I now have three m119 engines. A running '92 500sel 119.970 closed deck, short deck (228mm deck height) with 172000 miles, a '95 sl500 119.982 in a parts car but complete never ran with 130xxx ish miles i believe, and i just picked up a 90 or 91 500sl ,119.960 closed deck, tall deck (245mm deck height)with supposedly 4000 miles on it. it had porosity in the deck right near a cylinder and water jacket resulting in a blown headgasket but no milkshake. this thing is spotless inside the heads and timing cover. so i have all the parts i need for the most part and i'll be using the 119.982 for mockup. I'm trying to determine if i can use the 960 tall deck block heads on the 970 closed deck block engine. i found some info saying that they cant be because of different oil and water passage locations, but it listed .970 and .980 together. However i have found that the tall deck .960 and closed deck .970 block use the same headgasket and the later open deck .97x and .98x use a different one. so this would lead me to believe that the passages are the same and that i can use these low mile heads on my good engine. Has anyone tried this combo or have the two heads off an engine to compare? my main concern would be the timing chain guides in the head since the tall deck and short deck blocks guides are totally different in the timing chain cover area on the driver side.

I think your confused. "Deck" refers to the height of the deck surface (head gasket) from the crankshaft. There are tall deck and short deck m119s. If I remember correctly, the early m119s (with mechanical fuel injection) are tall deck. A design holdover from the m117. The later (post 92 yr.) m119s were all short deck engines.

Open deck and closed deck refers to the construction of the block at the head gasket surface. Closed deck blocks have a solid surface that makes the block more rigid and stronger. A small block Chevy or ford had a closed deck. Open deck block you can see the physical bores and the coolant passages around them. Most Honda engines are open deck.

I think all m119 tall deck (early cis engines) are closed deck. The later motors came both ways, probably as a cost cutting measure. I think 1993 was the switchover year from closed to open deck.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, maybe I didn't get that across right but I'm not confused at all. All 119.960 blocks are tall deck(245 mm from crank to deck surface) and closed deck. All other m119 are short deck(228 mm) .M119.970/972/974 up until late August 1993 production are closed deck and can be identified by a wider serpentine belt system. These are the only short deck engines AMG bored and stroked for 6 liters. They are in cars up to early 94. The rest are short and open deck m119.970/972/974/980/982/984. M119.971/975/981/985 are 4.2 liter displacement.

All that bieng said im just trying to figure out if the tall deck .960 heads, which are on closed deck blocks will fit on the early short and closed deck .970 block. The open deck engines use a different head gasket.

Just for anyone looking for info.
M119.960 are early 90-92 r129.066 500sl
M119.972 are r129.067 500sl 119.982 sl500
M119.970/980/971/981 are w140 420/500sel/s400/s500
M119.974 are w124.036 500e (rare) 119.975 is 400e
