3.92 diff on an auto?
hi
is it a bad idea to have a 3.92 diff with an auto gearbox? i noticed that the lowest ratio( highest numerically) diff that MB used with their auto gearboxes was the 3.58. im guessing this is for longevity reasons. |

3.69 came on the S320's W140 chassis.

MB avoided the lower ratios for longevity and fuel economy reasons. It wasn't always so. I had a 76 230 that had a gas 4 cyl, auto, and 3.92 gears. I hated it. The engine was always revving way too high on the highway.
Regards, Eric

My 1971 280SL W113 has the standard 4.08 gear..no problems and it sounds like a roadster should at speed !!!
The last of the 280SL production run did have a 3.92 gear, Ed A.
