500E: dual-exhaust?
 

Has any 500E/E500 owner split his/her exhaust to a dual appearance (one pipe per side)?

If so, please post pictures/URLs; thank you!

Renntech has done it- My old tech had a 6.0 with the dual exhausts. Sorry, No pics, and he sold the car last year.

A coupla weeks ago at the NE 500E500 GTG there was a green 500E with a left angled twin exhaust. I asked the owner if we could split the exhausts and run duals down each side. He commented that he did not think so because of the larger gas tank specific to this model. I have not looked at the undercarraige to see if this would be feasible. If the larger gas tank is occupying some of that space, how did Renntech overcome the problem?

I believe, is to remove the spare tire compartment and run dual pipes to a custom, rear muffler assembly.

I am considering doing this (or a quad-exhaust) at RBTech, in Los Angeles in the next 6-8 weeks.

Just make sure you know why you want to do it.

I've done extensive dyno testing with my other German marque car in an attempt to optimze the exhaust and power gains it provides. Bottom line is that the German engineers basically extract 99% of the available horsepower out of the engine with the "stock" exhaust. They're that good. The other factor is that the computer controlled engine managment doesn't like it when you only change one part of the power equation. Free flow exhaust means less backpressure, means that unless compensated for by chip tuning, lean burning air/fuel mixture, which is not happy-time for your exhaust valves. The O2 sensor can only adjust the mixture within a fairly narrow set of variables with a given data map in the control unit, so if you do the exhaust and open it up, take your car to a dyno with a knowledgeable chip tuner, and retune it to take advantage of the exhaust. Otherwise, I'd wager your torque and HP will be DOWN from stock.

I reluctantly concluded that any exhaust mods were strictly either for appearance or sound quality. Damn it, I want a V8 to sound like a V8 ;-), but I like torque better.

Why sacrifice the spare tire compartment for another muffler. The 2hp that you gain will be offset by an increase in weight. The single muffler system is what AMG even uses on SL73. Save your money and buy a low boost Koenig m119 supercharger.

I just looked thoroughly at: http://www.koenig-specials.com ; however:

1) I saw nothing about a 500E/E500 (M119) blower, anywhere.
2) That 90-degree bend/cosmetic-only quad-exhaust offering is BOGUS!!! I don't want to suffocate my exhaust flow for the sake of looks!

Can anyone tell me who makes the exhaust/tips in this picture (Kleemann E50K), please? It is NOT Kleemann, I do not believe...

I would think that the philosophy that we adhere to would be one of innovation, not duplication. The MB engineers already put together one hell of a drive train for for these Circa 1993 Factory Hot Rods. The likes of Renntech and Koenig allows the owner to attempt to tune to today's standard.

Since we snatched the M119 engine from the SL500 (R129 crowd)and their web site did not address a W124, I am making an assumption that the Koenig Komp pictured below would fit our configuration. Getting the hood closed after installing same may be a problem

As for the exhaust, a prior poster eloquently addressed the problem of redesigning the exhaust system without properly retuning the engine to compensate. I don't know if the rig pictured below would fit under our rear bumpers, but I am going to communicate with these folks to analyze the feasability of such a project
