farukh,

I agree with you completely regarding the 500E being a unique and extremely well rounded car. It has everything you could possibly want in a grand touring car. Leather everywhere, wood in all the right places, awesome power, great handling and total comfort.

My wife took the car yesterday (she carpools) and her friend couldn't stop talking about it. Apperently my wife finally figured out that on cold days it's great to turn the heater off, open the sunroof and turn on the heated seats. They were both convinced that the only thing missing was a massage feature for the seats, if this was included there would be no reason to ever want to leave the car.

I took her for a spin last night and all I can say is the performance is amazing when its cold, almost breathtaking. I can never get tired of hearing that V8 growl when I punch the throttle and the permagrin you get when you realize this cars capabilities. This car never fails to get my heart pumping.

Ebay values

In my opinion, ebay rarely yields a truly correct, reliable price. Sometimes, an idiot decides to overpay because he does not know any better. This is the "greatest fool" theory at work. More often, the cars you see on Ebay are offered by a dealer with very little of their history known or described. On top of that, people are afraid to bid top dollar on a car they have not yet seen.

As a very recent buyer who paid $24,500 for a 1992 silver over gray one owner 84,000 mile California car in essentially perfect cosmetic condition with no work needed, I think I paid a market correct price. BTW, the asking price in Hemmings was $27,000.

no matter what

I will buy as many 500Es/E500s as I can afford, in my lifetime.

This car is my religion - and I value it above ANY OTHER offering!!!

The only other car I would ever want would be one of these:

- Mercedes-Benz Pullman limo
- Maybach 62
- Ferrari Berlinetta 355
- Porsche GT2

Price notwithstanding, there is a priceless permanence to a car
which makes one's heart race almost as fast as the car, itself!

Happy driving,

if it barks like a dog...

I was the winning bidder on the 94 E500 on ebay. The car is now back up for sale on ebay.

Suffice it to say sometimes on ebay it only looks like a "steal."

Shame, I really liked my "E500 for a day."

mistake of a lifetime?

I have no reason to put the seller in a bad light, so please understand that is not my intention here.

Carfax came up with the following:
ALERT! CARFAX search results on this 1994
MERCEDES BENZ E500 (WDBEA36E7RC090670) identify a
potential odometer rollback. CARFAX analyzed this vehicle's
reported odometer readings to determine if any
reading is less than a previously reported reading.

CALCULATION: POTENTIAL ODOMETER ROLLBACK
On 06/09/1998 the odometer reading was reported
as: 57,642 miles
On 05/19/2000 the odometer reading was reported
as: 35,000 miles

I brought this up to the seller and he indicated it to have been a typo on the part of California Motor Vehicles (the
second entry should have been 65,000.) I am on the
East Coast and as much as I want the car I don't have
the wherewithal to argue the case with California MV.
The seller put the ball in my court in that respect,
and I can't take the risk and resultant resale issues
of purchasing a car with a CarFax issue.

We agreed to let it go. The price is absolutely a steal for what it is, so perhaps I was mistaken to let it go. My wagon will be lonely for now.

As you can see, I still have some regret- although I've saved myself explaining to the wife why I need two Mercedes Hot Rods.

I actually bid on that E, not much just wanted to see if I could steal it. So after hearing Dave's story I was highly tempted to see what will the seller say about this, in other words will he come clean? So I sent him an email asking about what happend, this is what he replied:

"The guy could not come up with the money so he left me positive feedback and I left it at that, thanks Justin"

I guess you really have to know who you're dealing with on ebay. And then you can still get burned.

good day all

Hi Farrukh:

I recently had an independent appraisal of my car done for insurance purposes. They placed a current market value of $71,500 Cdn (just over $45,000 US) on the car, based on condition and rarity.

It has been said by a few automotive authors that the 500E/E500 is the only future classic from the 1990's for Mercedes. Those who wish to retain the value of their cars should carefully consider any mods that are not reversable!

OTOH, those that want to modify their cars to the nuts and drive the wheels off are gonna have a lot of fun
