W124 pads & spring ident help

Hi All,

Where can I find, on the spring, what it is (H&R, Eibach, etc.)? They are black...

How can I identify spring pads (color, texture, little bumps, etc.)?

All help appreciated...

thanks,

sjsfiji

The springs will have information painted on them. If they are dirty, clean them up and look for the markings. If they are new it should be obvious.

The rubber pads have little bumps on them. Up front 1 is thinnest, 4 is thickest. For the rears 1 is thinnest, 3 is thickest. You will probably need to play around with them to get the car to sit level. When I installed Neuspeed springs, I had to use a 3-point read pad to get the back end as high as possible, then cut 1/2 coil off the front springs and use a 2-pt pad to bring the front down enough. That's what happens when you don't use the proper springs for the car (these were free in the trunk when I bought it.)

Neil V (another guy on the forum) has tried various springs and he swears by the 500E springs and struts. He says the Sportline stuff makes it ride pretty harsh. YMMV, etc..

feeling bumps

Can i feel for the bumps while it's installed in the car?

I was thinking of taking the wheel off, insert fingers through the coils and feel for the bumps... advice?

Will the number of coils, color, etc... determine which brand spring I have?

thanks,

You can see the bumps (little rubber tips about 1/8 inch around, maybe smaller) easily. It may help to jack up the car and use a flashlight. They will be at the outer edge of the rubber spring pad, at the top of the spring. There's nothing to see or feel inside the spring.

Number of coils, color, etc won't help much. All of my springs (stock, H&R, Carat, and Neuspeed) were all black. All had markings of some type painted on them, usually a name and number, in white paint.

HTH,

spring ident help

Hi,

My springs have equal distance between coils like the stock ones, but I'm sure they are aftermarket and are black in color.

I tried cleaning them up while on the car, but can't seem to find anything.

Which springs are these? Can you name the springs that are 'NOT' PROGRESSIVE, unlike the eibach and H&Rs?

I need to ident and replace them... ride too bouncy...

thanks,

I *think* H&R springs are variable-rate (progressive) and Eibachs are linear (non-progressive), but you can't tell by looking at them... the coils are evenly spaced. I would call both mfr's and ask to speak with a technical person. They may be able to give you precise measurements of the spring coils, and assuming the mfr's are different, you could measure yours and figure out what you have! Other than that I'm stumped...

how are the shocks?

Are they ok?

I would pull a wheel and look for any markings ont he spring. usually the h&R or neuspeed springs are marked somewhere in the ceter area of the spring.

I have neuspeed springs on my 300ce, with no problems running 2 bump front 3 bump rear pads, the car is lower, but not too low at all. Ride is only slightly bouncy due to failing rear shocks.

Check your shocks, especially int he rear, are they leaking (Damp or so looking)?

bouncy

The shocks are brand spanking new. I tried looking at the springs but couldn't find any marking. Anyway, I asked a friend what he thought and said the car isn't bouncy. He thinks it's the seats that are amplying the bounce, thus the bouncy ride. I think he may be right. The ride just might be too stiff that's all. I'll leave it as is for now. Thanks for the replies...

Yep, that's another possibility - they're just too stiff for your taste, just like my Neuspeed springs are a bit stiff for my liking on my one car. I'd yank them and try something different, as mentioned earlier...
