Big brake kits for a W124
Does anybody (AMG, Brembro, Winwood, ect) make a big brake kit for a W124? If not is there anyway to get bigger brakes such as take the rotors off an E55 or something?

I would suggest using the search function as the topic has been beaten to death.

StopTech makes big brakes for the W124. "ItalianBenz" on this forum has them installed.
There's the ever popular 500E/500SL to 600SL caliper upgrade. FWIW, not needed unless you need less fade (e.g., AutoCross or track days), or you want bragging rights. If you want shorter stops, get stickier and wider tires. :-) neil 1988 E36T AMG 1993 500E PS: do a SEARCH. |

I have some 1994 600SL R129 front brakes for sale right now, direct bolt on for the 400E/500Es or cars with the bigger hubs.

There are a ton of options, it all depends how much you want to spend. The cheap route is to get used parts from MB's with bigger brakes, like the SL600. Full details are in this document:
http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/124_brakes.pdf Now if you don't mind spending $1500-$3500, there are huge kits available from Bekkers (Brembo), and Stoptech (355mm), which will probably require 17" or 18" wheels. These kits are for the FRONT axle only. For bigger rear brakes, you're back to OE items as listed in the spreadsheet above... Some photos of the late R129 334mm x 32mm brakes are here: http://www.meimann.com/images/mercedes/W124_brakes/ |

GSXR,
Do you have some mass measurements of the 334 mm system yet? I might consider that, or stop wasting money on all these set ups, and just bite the bullet and get the Brembo set up.

Austin,
I have the exact weight info at home. From memory, the calipers are quite light (part aluminum) at about 8-9 pounds, but the rotors are pretty heavy at 24lbs each. I emailed Brembo asking if they have a lightweight 2-piece rotor that will work with the stock MB 334mm calipers but they haven't replied yet. I doubt they have anything that fits - they want to sell their $3k GranTurismo kit (or whatever it's called). I have NO data on the 320mm (600SL) rotor or caliper weights. I expect the 600SL iron caliper to be about 10lbs, and the 320mm rotor around 20lbs, but I'm not sure... those are wild guesses. |
