W201 / W124 Caliper Question
My 93 2.3 has the same front rotors as a 92 E420, 93-95 E320 Coupe, Convertible and Wagon. The part number is 124 421 15 12.
But when I tried to cross reference the calipers and I got two different numbers. My car: 000 420 61 83 (L) and 000 420 62 83 (R) W124's above: 000 420 72 83 (L) and 000 420 73 83 (R) What's the difference between these calipers? Regards, Don

If you have those calipers on your 190, they are wrong. Unless you are using a 4-piston caliper.

Yes, that info is bad. You tell Ron out there @ German Star.

So my calipers are the same as the W214's listed above?

You don't have the same calipers as the 92 400E. Those things are monsters, check my web page and you will be able to see the difference between the OE 190E calipers and the 400E calipers. Most 2.3l 190's did not have the 300E calipers like the 190 2.6 and 16 valve, they were actually smaller. I bet your calipers don't look like either of the ones on my web page though.

Rik,
I got the info from GSXR's Spreadsheet. Here's a link: Click me. According to this the 93 and up 400E and E420 had bigger brakes than the 92 400E. Regards, Don

The main difference between the 92 and 93-94 400E's was the thickness of the rotor. The 92 being 22.4 mm and the 93+ being 25.4 mm. The diamater was still 295 mm. The calipers probably carry different part numbers but the sizes are basically the same and the clamping force is the same. The rotor thickness are increase to deal with a warping issue.
The 190E 2.3's that I have seen up close have smaller calipers/rotors than the 190E 2.6 (which uses 300E units) but someone on another forum mentioned that the 92-93 190E 2.3's use 300E brakes as well. I can't confirm that fact though, hence why I pointed you to my web site. The 400E brakes definately did not come stock on any 190E. The closest would be the EVO's which used R129 brakes (aluminium Brembos from the 500E) with 300 mm rotors. |
