Just bought a '94 E420 (upgrading from '86 5-speed 300E)--I'm new to his whole "forum" thing, so take it easy on me. But: wondering what kind of performance upgrades I can plan for over the next few years (suspension, engine, exhaust, etc.) Thanks, all. --Mitch

E420 is in good shape to begin with. There are two things you can do tire and wheel wise. I'm gonna recommend what I always do. Sportline 15" x 7J 8-holes with 215/60/15 in Michelin Pilot XGT V4, Pirelli P6000, or Yokohama AVS Intermediate. Other than that, there isn't much that needs to be done to an E420.

Yeah, I know I'll get some flack, but I'd go 225/50-16 on a properly-offset rim. Maybe a bit more perceived twitchiness, but mucho more grip. If too sensitive, then upgrade/lower the suspension. Otherwise, enjoy the car OE, as it's a highway star. Maybe just 205/60-15s on the original wheels??

Tough to beat a V-8 W124 IMHO...enjoy your ride

Thanks for the info. Probably stick with the stock wheels for now (15x6.5). What are the biggest/tallest tires that will fit? 205x60x15's, 215's, 205x65's???

205/65-15 is a bit taler and wider than OE, but will fit fine.

I just "modded" my 1994 E420 to E500 specs. It is the equivalent of a sex change; the car handles and looks great. The cost is pretty expensive but not out of line if shocks need replacing at the time.

Write if anyone wants details.
