1989 300E rear sway bar install directions..

Hello,

I purchased the sprotline sway bars for front and rear. The front went in well but I cannot figure out how to "thread" the rear ones in. What is the procedure? What addtional things do I have to remove? I am using jack stands and such. Do I need addtional equipment?

The handling with just the front has significantly reduced the cars heavy front roll when cornering. It is really nice and I would recommend them! Once I get those rear ones in the car should be dialed in.

Thanks agian,

John

I believe that to install the rear bar you have to drop the subframe to install.

John, I just did this. Get the manual (CD) and you will be enlightened! First of all, safely support the car! You need to disconnect at the read driveshaft flex connection (no need to remove, just make sure that the bushings are free), drop the driveshaft center bearing (remove heatshield first). The above allows the movement of the next step. Floor jack under the front of the differential, loosen front bolts of the subframe and drop the jack to lower about 1.5 inches at the front mounts. Leave jack under there and "thread" out the old and thread in the new.
("all ya gotta do"). Hanno

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks, I have the manual and will look it up tonight. It sounds easy but time consuming, I am sure it will be worth it.

John, forgot something... The subframe bolts in my 300E were loctited and removing them was somewhat different. Instead of slowly turning out, they seemed to jerk a few degrees at a time accompanied by sounds of protest. Hanno

Here's the service manual procedure, with some edits by me. You don't need to follow every step listed (if you're careful) which will save a LOT of time. And I agree about the subframe mount bolts, they really protest badly on removal - very odd. Anyway, read this carefully before starting:

http://www.meimann.com/docs/mercedes/Rear_sway_bar_install.pdf

I've done this 3 times. First time took nearly 4 hours. Second time was under 2 hours, third time was under 1 hour. Plan on 2-4 if you've never done it before, and be happy if it goes faster!

Good luck,

Thanks

That's great information. I will give it a shot next weekend. Thanks again!
