How come the 500Sl was not "sold" in the States?
I have seen very few of these cars, actually only one in person besides the one I own. Did Mercedes must have thought these care would not have been good sellers here?

Probably because of the expense of converting the platform to US emissions and safety specs and getting it certfied by the Feds and California. They were selling 380's like crazy in the 1980's and probably saw no reason to go to the trouble of introducing another model.
Same with the 280, 420, and 300 models.
