Sounds like the little vapour relief line that comes down from the plastic tank above the fuel tank (allows for expansion of fuel/vapour as temperature changes).

A pic would help if available?

BTW - did you find the source of the clacking noise? Sounds like worn out universal joints on the axles - check the rubber boots at both ends of each rear axle to make sure there are no splits or tears that could let grease out or dirt in.

Even if there are no tears or sign of leaking grease its possible that a union has failed.

I would jack the car, support it very firmly on axle stands and then run it in drive at idle speed to see if that gives any clues away.

Needless to say use your common sense, dont get under the vehicle while its running etc.

The other possibility is wear somewhere in the driveshaft - like a loose flange coupling or worn hanger bearing.

Den Downunder

Hi It would be much better to put the car on a hoist with all 4 wheels off the ground , then raise it with the wheels just a few inches of the floor .

As the previous post mentioned start the car and run in drive at idle speed .

when you raise the car, make sure you support the back lower control arms, so the half shafts are kept at an angle similar to the angle while driving down the road. Without the support you could end up with alot more noises. check your carrier bearing also, with the engine off, grab the drive shaft and try to move it up/down and r/l bad one case sound described as thumping, but maybe their thump is your clack. If you still are at a loss after all the previous replies, pull your rear rotors and check your parking brake shoes, I would expect failure to show up more like a scraping noise, but maybe something inside in hitting each wheel rotation. For what it's worth.

Oops, re reading your original post, you never asked about the clacking, only about the strange fittings. I noticed one under my car too, but mine looks like a schraeder valve.. I can't think of anything that would use an air fitting in that location, on a 78 450sl, or your car.

The part has been identified as an vapor emissions valve for the fuel tank. I am still searching for the clacking noise. I will be putting the car on jack stands this weekend.

Sorry for the delayed response but the winter and snow here has kept the baby in the garage. The part was identified as a purge valve. I replaced it and don't sense any differance in the cars operation. As for the clacking sound I found it was a broken stabilizer link. I have had both of them replaced and the noise is gone. Thanks to all for your help and advise I am so happy it was not an axle needing replacement.
