Mpg on your SL

I noticed that my mpg gauge somtime regesters I am getting 30 mpg on highway driving. Do you guys really think that is a accurate readout?

If you are coasting, beleivable. It depends on the algorithm used to calculate MPG - how much averaging over time is done. I was in my boss's infamous 8-6-4 Caddilac in the early 80's and it would register 99 MPG while coasting, and 4 while accellerating!

The mpg guage is not super-accurate, but 30mpg during steady highway driving sounds about right. I average between 17 and 27mpg from my SL500 depending on how much is urban driving and how much is cruising on the open road. At a steady 70mph I would expect to be getting instantaneous consumption readouts of about 30mpg+, otherwise I would never get mid- to upper-twenties averages. It is acceleration and stop-start driving that leads to especially high fuel consumption; steady speed driving on level ground requires very little fuel.

A while back my brother and I took a long cross country cruise in his 93 Vette (6spd).
Several time while cruising we hit 30mpg on the computer. Overall for the trip we did average in the mid to upper 20s so it seems reasonable.

But that was cruising on the highway, although at 80+.

Yes. All of my readings are on highways also. I find it interesting that some SL owners don't think the car is capable of getting better gas mileage if you drive conservatively.

The reading I get generally is on straight level highway going 75mph, top down and AC on. No passenger or luggage.
