the SL, or all V-8 coupe modes with the lower oilpan that is aluminum hold 9.0 quarts, the standard V-8 hold 8.5 quarts, the only engine mercedes makes that i have see hold 10.0 quarts is the V-12, only precaution about the filter is be careful when loosening it, oil will come out and you may get burned.

SS,
My '87 with the same engine as yours uses 8.5 quarts. Filter is different and suggest getting one from Phil or Rusty or your favorite parts supplier, even the MB dealership! The change service you use or if doing yourself, should be careful on two items-
-Make sure the little spring at the bottom of the oil filter canister is reinstalled with the new filter, and,
-Do not over tighted the canister bolt, 17mm Allen, I believe, as the canister is aluminum and you can crack it. I believe the book calls for 24 lbs tourque on the bolt which simply stated is 'snug'.

In Florida with 160K miles on my car, I use Castrol or Kendall 20W/50W oil, not synthetic, and change @ 3-4000 miles.

Virtually any MB V8 in the last oh 30 or so years hold 8.5qts, about the only car that would be an exception is the old 6.9 (116 chassis) which had a dry sump oil system. (up to about 2003, after that no guarantee)
