I'd like to start doing interim oil changes on my 300SL. I would need to use a topsider or LiquiVac. Can the oil filter be accessed from the engine compartment, and if so can you provide a little guidance on this. Thanks.

The oil filter change is easy enough. It is located on the drivers side of the engine between the air filter housing and the firewall. You will be able to see an aluminum housing about 2.5" in diameter with a ribbed cap at an elevation slightly lower than the air filter housing. Once you remove the cap, the oil filter element can be removed and replaced. Most replacement filters come with a new o-ring for the cap as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wayne. Access looks easy enough. Does the ribbed cap require a special tool for removal?

I believe that MB has a special tool, but I am able to remove by hand. It is sealed with an o-ring, so it only needs to be snugged. If yours is very tight you could use a small strap wrench.

Mercedes does have a special tool for that (in case it is just too tight).
