Almost certainly a warm-up regulator problem. Do you know how to check control pressure?

This can be a really good chance to learn, but it is not a good area to charge into without some knowledge of your K-Jet system.
You can gamble $199 on a rebuilt warm-up regulator (WUR) from Fastlane/Phil or German Star, or you can check the pressures and make sure of the problem. To check the pressures, you need to buy or borrow a pressure gauge with fittings for Bosch K-jet (they are on ebay), and do some research on how to use it. The 107 CD has instructions, as does Charles Probst's book, as does the Haynes manual. There is stuff here if you do a Search. You will need a decent metric tool set with extra 14mm and 12mm wrenches, and a multi-meter with a duty cycle setting, because chances are you will need to adjust the mixture via the on-off ratio if you end up replacing the WUR.

Just because this could lead to confusion - and OK, maybe I'm a little pedantic, too - his car uses the KE Jetronic system. Probably the same fittings, but if he wants to find a troubleshooting page he'll need to look for the right system.

Not so - the '85's have K-jet with lambda, no KE until 1986.

A word of advice - be sure to tell your mechanic about the rebulit WUR.
Otherwise he might order a new one from the local dealer and do significant financial damage to you.
