I assume this is 125K miles, correct?

You could have worn clutches in your tranny. I do, regretfully, at 108K miles on a 1982 380SL. Especially if transmission fluid changes and filter changes were neglected by previous owners over the years. As the solution is to rebuild the transmission I have decided to live with it until it becomes much worse.

It could be a vacuum issue, could be a modulator issue or could be transmission internals. Does the problem manifest itself ALWAYS as an rpm spike between 2 and 3 with a delayed up shift in gear?

Do the symptoms change if

(1) the transmission is cold or warm?
(2) you accelerate harder?
(3) going up a steep hill

Any further info may help.

There is an excellent set of posts of this subject in the diesel forum where you can pick up most of the control principles of the MB transmission. The principles of transmission control are the same in your car, I believe, with configuration differences of course.

I am chasing my issue as well, mine is a true flair, no hard end, happens cold or hot, worse on hard acceleration, no change with terain. I am going to check my control rod linkages this weekend.

Check my posts on the modulator valve. With the SL models it is very important to make sure there are no vacume leaks, since the modulator valve requires vacume to operate the transmission. The transmission needs to know what the engine is doing and it knows this by the vacume. As you will see in my posts on this subject, it is very easy to remove the vacume line from the valve, unscrew the valve itself, and attach a vacume pump to it. You should see the pin on the working end move in and out with application of vacume. You can easily find my posts on this subject by searching my name "danwashuk"............Good Luck.........Dan
