Torque Spec Cam Bearing Caps & Head Cvr; M119.982 motor
I have ordered the R129 DVD manual, but it won't arrive for a week and I want to replace the Cam Oil Connectors now if I can.
Could someone supply the torque spec on the cam bearing caps and for the head cover. I'm also going to replace the R & L chain guides up on the top; there's a torque spec for those bolts as well. Thanks in advance. David |

Torque on Cam Brg caps cannot be 50 Nm
These bolts are grade 8.8 M7 x 1 mm pitch. The length of engagement appears sufficient to support the full preload the bolt is capable of, which is a tension of ~5000 lbs.
My calculations indicate that the torque should be more like 13 Nm to get close approx 90% of the proof strength of the bolt. The breaking torque does not support the 50 Nm figure either. Could you re-check the spec you supplied? |

The spec is 12NM, I use an in/lbs torque wrench set to 106in/lbs
On the V/C I never bother to torque. You have to seat the metal v/c stops against the head (this sets the squish on the gasket) and then just give it a bit more to hold. Doesn't take a lot, you should be able to feel the extra resistance when the v/c stops touch the head.

Thank you Duxthe1,
I wouldn't have done the 50 Nm, and I'm glad you came promptly with the proper data as I had the top of heads opened up at the time on Saturday and had to find a solution. No offense to Deltacom, but the special tool shown on the photo'd page showing the valve spring compressor a motor with cam followers shows clearly that it is for a different motor. The all-aluminum 119.982 does not have cam followers. The cam lobe pushes directly on the hydraulic lifter. That spring compressor would not even work on the motor in head disassembly as the cams would necessarily already be removed. I don't like to think of what would happen if somebody tried to torque those M7 bolts to 50 Nm; I'm pretty sure I know and it would be very ugly. Be careful. |
