New ignition, old tumbler, no starting

Yesterday we replaced the ignition unit and protective cover on my friend's
'90 300 SL. We put the old tumbler on it. The started cranks but does not start. I do not see any ignition at the plugs.
Do we need to reset anything?
ALLData software indicates that ignition unit and tumbler is supposed to be replaced as a whole and the tumble cap is not supposed to come off so I am surprised that the dealer would sell the untit without a new tumbler.

Thanks
