I found a few mid 70s S class cars today at the local yard and got a gas cap, the hood bolts and clips, came home and put the hood back on. I also ordered a new haines shop manual and am patiently waiting for it to come. In the meantime, I fiddled around under the hood and discovered a hand full of vac lines disconnected and the bolt that holds the go pedal linkage to the the intake and also the ground to the injectors, loose and kind of stripped at the end. The second bolt is just GONE! There's what seems to be a vacuum regulator completely unconnected and the fuel pressure regulator on the rail looks totally wrong to me. It has a fuel return line on it and not a vac line? That could be right but, I don't have any reference yet to judge it by.
I will wait till I get the BIBLE and make sure all the hoses, fuel, vac etc are right before I attempt to start the car. The Ex. manifold gaskets look new and so do the valve cover gaskets! After really giving it the once over, I think if it ever had Cats, they've been moved or eliminated! My removed sun visors are actually ok but one of the brackets that hold one to the top of the window by popping it into it is missing!
I wonder how many items on the big sedans are interchangeable? the tailight lenses look the same and I DO need a complete pass side turn signal unit.

I just bought a set for my '75 450 on ebay. The seller was Rich and Famous Auto Tops. They have all colors and ship same day from CA. I'm in SC and got them in two days. $15 per side gets you the cup and the tab.

I bought my top from Diamond Mall. But they are the eBay outlet for a larger company - Germanex, I believe. There are a number of others on eBay. I had a bad experience with one when I bought carpets (qualitytopsandinteriors) - avoid them.

I bought sets of sunvisor clips from another eBay vendor. Price was good, but they cracked after a short while. Originals lasted 37 years! They (Josephinas) to their credit did send me a replacement set.

Dealing with eBay vendors is always a risk. Dealing with a well established company like World Upholstery is much safer, but does cost a bit more (I bought my seat covers from them)

You are going to be a bit disappointed by that "BIBLE". It is notoriously light in those details. So too is the official MB manual.

You are right dugald - Maybe a picture of another owner's '75 engine would be a start. Most of what he needs is in the shop manual, but finding it is another thing. I think I already game tbird the W116 link that has the engine shop manual.

Once everything is in proper place, next will be adjusting it so it will actually run

Haynes. OK for the basics. It has at least one mistake that can cost major money following the instructions. Timing Chain Cover removal.

I always try to get my hands on a haynes or factory manual and STAY clear of chiltons as they make my head hurt from too many models and years covered on ONE PAGE!
I rely heavily on my FORUMS for advise on all of my toys and passions!

Do a search for soft tops. There is quite a few threads about them.....one includes various vendors and related quality issues.

The Haynes has it's uses. Kind of like the old Sears catalogue. It comes in handy in emergency situations.

All I really need right now is a reliable vacuum diagram and one for the injection.
What Brand oil filter do we like to use on this engine? I always use castrol oil unless its a diesel and then its rotella. I read some were that there are those who use rotella in their MB gassers of this vintage. There's a Altrom OX32D Oil Filter on Ebay right now?

Mann or Mahle

The german made mann or mahle filters would be my first choice, but they are kind of expensive at 12-15$ .Purolator pure 1 or WIX are probably easier to find.
If you pick up a mann and compare the weight to a fram...there's just no comparison. It probably weighs double the fram unit!

I am in the sticks here and found a FRAM yesterday with just the rubber ring. Haven't bought it yet. My next thing to obsess about till my haynes comes is that there's no water in the car and wonder if I should be worried about DRY waterpump seals bfr I crank the engine??? I assume I will need a good aluminum engine coolant?.

Got the haynes and HATE IT! I messed with this crane unit all weekend and just have no spark even though I get the LED light pulse. I have fuel pressure but no injector signal except for the cold start, but I figure that's part of the starting circuit. I hear clicking above the fuse box and assume its the ECU relay but have nothing that shows me how to know if its getting juice. I am really lost without some reliable reference to these systems.
This looks more and more like the JAG injection which is fine, but at least I had a ton of reference material with that car. The old ign. amp was removed in lue of the crane unit but the plug is just laying there loose and I wonder if that's one of my problems?
I snatched a handful of relays out of an early 80s 380 coupe at the yard just to have them on hand.
