steering coupler

I suspect the steering coupler needs replaced in my 560SL. Knocking sound while sitting still and turning wheel back and forth. My main problem is finding a replacement part. Any suggestions? Most parts houses seem to not offer it.

Lookd online and yeah it sure is hard to find! I tried peachparts first as it would support this site, but no luck. Here's one I did find:

If it's the coupler, the steering wheel will be very sloppy.
more than 2 inches of 'play' in the wheel when parked.
It's a very involved job to replace, due to location and clearances.
There are a few threads here and the other place with instructions and tips.

Good luck. You're going to need it.

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. And the scars.

If you can't find one, or want to save money (like me) you can just grind off and remove the rivets , rebush with some suitable tubing ( I used fuel line) and replace with bolts (I used grade 10.9 ) and LOCKTITE.

Earlier versions of this coupling were renewable. You may be able to get the bushings from MB if you so desire...

As hard as this bugger is to get to, damned if I would compromise!

The compromise is likely to be that when you go order a new one, you will get a Chinese part. That seems to be the trend.....

OH sure, you want something to eat and some chicken fried rice or General Tso's Chicken is just fine, but you need a CAR part and the Chinese suddenly aren't GOOD enough for you, I mean think about it, what's more important, what you eat or the parts you put on your car???

How can you say that.
This is one of the most critical parts on our cars !! Save a few bucks and run the risk of having no steering capability? Considering where it is located and the difficulty of doing the replacement it would be quite foolish.

Seems nobody is addressing the fact that in original post he mentioned he has a knock when standing still and turning the wheel from side to side. That doesn't sound like a bad coupler to me. That sounds like the steering gear box is loose. I believe the maintenance calls for the 3 bolts that hold it in place to be re-tightened every 30,000 miles.
