450sl shifting issues

I just got my car on the road for the first time since i have owned it. I just rebuilt the engine and have started driving it. The problem i am encountering is that the auto trans seems to want to shift 300-500rpm after its shift point. I have found that if i back off the throttle, that it will shift at the correct point. It sounds as though it is actually winding out before it does shift normally. The tranny fluid is fresh, as well as the filter. Thjere are no vacuum leaks and i ran all new hoses to all my vacuums. The linkage rod to the trans might be the culprit, but im not sure if i should make the adjustment longer or shorter in order to be at the shift point i need to be at. Any feedback would be appreciated.
