Vinyl Dye Tip?

Hey Guys,

I'm finally starting to put together the interior on my 350SL which means dying and/or re-dying some vinyl bits. I got some of the right color dye from World Upholstery but, never having used the stuff, wondered if anyone with any experience had any tips or anything.

Biggest problem is that my interior is Parchment & it's a ***** to find any pieces in that color. So I'm going to be trying some dark-to-light dye jobs.

Any advice?

I bought my dye from WU. I think it is same as SEM dyes, but at least they have MB colors. Problem I had, was that the codes and color names they use are their own, but are similar to MBs codes. A 168 from WU is not same as 168 for my 72 MY car. It is important to get samples or send them samples when matching colors. I at first ordered Tobacco, which was wrong, but then got Mahogany, which was right.

I had acquired a black center console to replace my cracked one. I had no trouble covering the black with a lighter color.

They do sell several otehr products that they recommend using. One is a primer. I bought it, but think it may only be needed when painting hard shiny plastic surfaces. They also sell a cleaning solvent. I bought that too. It probably isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and should be used to get all grease etc off surfaces before coating.

The dye is very forgiving. It doesn't look great when first applied, but and "pebbling" from spray even out and surfaces look great.

In these pictures you can see before (black) & after (mahogany) for console and my meter panel.

Clean the parts well before application.

Then clean 'em again.

Then clean 'em again.
