New SL owner saying hello!

I'm normally a diesel guy but had the chance to buy this peachy 1987 560sl for $5000.

It is so new to me that I do now even know what color the soft top is nor do I know how to remove the hardtop.

Some pictures...

Welcome to the club. If you accept the fact these are a German interpretation ( a mighty fine one at that) of a 55 T-Bird - more boulevard cruiser than sports car you should be quite happy. I love mine.

Here are three links for you. The first one will explain how to raise/lower the soft top and remove the hardtop. Make sure you have a helper with you when you remove the hardtop as the thing is bloody heavy.

http://www.oursl.com/research/560-hardtop/107_560sl_hardsoft-2.htm

The second link is resource page for W107 and should give you a wealth of information about your car.

http://northernresource.com/mercedes/107-links.htm#Upholstery_&_Trim

The final one will tell you what your color is.

Many thanks. I was wondering what those metal spoons were for!

Also, I drive like an old lady anyway so my performance expectations are fairly modest. Thanks again.

Love that color combo. Hate the turd they placed on the trunk of the '86 and '87.

These things were designed to look elegant around town, and haul it on the Autobahn. When in proper tune and shape, they will really hold it together at the upper limits on the open road. Take it out and let it rip, sometime.

the "SPOONS" are what you use to loosen the 4 locks that hold the roof in place!
Two over the sun visors and the other two on each side in the back were the roof meets the deck!

I am learning this SL is a gas guzzler!

My daily driver is a 190d.

Two opposite ends of the fuel consumption spectrum!

If I ever get the timing chain finished and fix all the collateral damage I caused in doing it, I hope to get 20+ mpg on the newly acquired '85 380SL. This is to replace wife's '83 300D. With the diesel fuel price premium over regular I am hoping to get pretty close to par on fuel cost. You aren't going to , coming from a 190D...

They aren't the best for mileage but they are the best for the series though. I get about 17 miles around town and low twenties on the highway.

He is a diesel driver... The 560SL is definitely a sports car!

Yes, they still had not figured out how to wring more miles out of a gallon of gass in 1987! I have an '87 SEC and 2006 CLS. It's amazing how much power the CLS has from 5 liters compared to the SEC's 5.6 liters on top of the improved mileage.

while we are all being enslaved by OPEC and I get REALLY twisted that Diesel just keeps going up and up...A lux car is just that and if I wanted great mileage in my SL, and had the time, I would drop a 603 diesel in it! My volvo AWD wagon has a 5cyl turbo and pushes 30mpg and uses premium. Since premium is cheaper than Diesel, I don't obsess! I am sure the SL gets lousy mileage, but its just a sunday driver and I dont give it much thought!

Yes. The SL is definitely a weekend car even though my office is only 10 miles away.

It certainly is not the most practical car since I have to plan my trips ahead of time to make sure that I will only be taking on 1 passenger.

One thing about it though...it is FAST! at least for a guy who normally drives a 190 diesel and a Volvo 240. I like it.
