Windshield for 1981 280 SL, R107

Another windshield question. I talked with four of the local auto glass companies and they all tell me the following: We only have listings for 280 ce, 380sl and have nothing on a 280 sl roadster 107 windshield. My 1981 mercedes is a grey market with 380sl emblem on the left reat trunk. On the door plate, it states it is a 280sl R107 that was converted overseas in germany. Is a 380 sl the same windshield.

Can the rag top being too tight possibly have cracked the windshield? Just curious before I put a new windshield in this Friday. On this car, it takes two people to get the convertible top to pull down into the two slots over windshield. You have to pull and tug with all your might to get the male prongs to line up into the two slots. Car sat under a red neck carport for 8 years or so with the rag top on it but is still in good condition. I think it is possible that I may have cracked it trying to pull enough forward to push it down. I have always engaged the back of rag top first and then pulled it up to the front. Will wetting the top down make it stretch anymore. Is it normal for this top to be so difficult to pull forward enough to line up for slots?

Not a chance that a tight top cracked the window. That window frame is structural and is probably the strongest part of the car. In absence of a roll bar....THAT is the roll bar. Just make sure you duck if you flip.

As far as the tight top is concerned....mine is quite tight as well. I only lock the rear to the first notch (I don't crank it down) before moving to the front.

Fronts go in first then the rear. Mercedes Benz R107 Hard And Soft Top Instructions - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

Sometimes I have to follow Nobby's suggestion.

280sl windshield same as 380sl

Rowdy and Nobby: Thank you so much. I learn something new everyday since messing with this car. Got to tell you what I encountered an hour or so ago. Fast idle problem got better when I found the hose under the idle adjustment screw unconnected. Previously idling 1500 plus when first starting and never getting below 1000 when driving. Got it down to 1200 idling when cold to 7 or 800 when engaging transmission. However, the engine now will knock off when it gets down to 500 or so as I put it in gear.

Probably when hot? Turn up the air idle screw a tich for now.

It's a very fine line with the M110, I find. All the air gadgets, valves and
WUR as well as thermostat, timing and mixture have to be right on to have a proper warm up and warm idle.

I'm still struggling with that myself but I have a mani trani so I can live with a high idle until I get it sorted.

OK so the idle screw is on the tube on the drivers side of the engine?
When I turn it counter clockwise the idle increases
My problem is that after several adjustments it now appears to negatively affect the
engine power as well as shift points in the automatic transmissions

Tucked in below the distributor?

That would be it.

Counter clockwise allows more un-metered air in and idle should increase.

It should have no affect on anything but idle.
