Soft top inop

Assistance needed: 1989 500sl (R129)
I just removed the hardtop for the summer and upon attempting to close the soft top it raised halfway and then stopped. Checked for anything binding and found no errors.had to manually close it with the supplied multi-purpose tool. upon attempting to re-open it normally, the rear curtain assembly will raise and the deck lid will also open up but then everyting stops..
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
