Steering box

Hi All,

Would the steering gear from let's say a 1983 380SE fit a 1983 380SL? (i.e., is the W126 steering box more or less the same as the R107; they sure look the same.)

They are not interchangeable. Fixing bolts are placed in different locations on the boxes.

107

126

There's also a note in the shop manual about a special marking on the SL box, something about a design change that has to do with the steering linkage IIRC.

Thanks guys! How about the steering box of a 1975 SLC (would that fit the '83 SL) or the steering box of a W116?

The 1975 SLC yes it would.... but not the 116.
For the 107 the same box is compatible with following models:-

1973 - 1989 Mercedes R107-chassis cars including:

1. 1972 350SL
2. 1981-1985 380SL/SLC
3. 1972-1980 450SL/450SLC
4. 1986-1989 560SL (3.25 turn lock to lock box only) for the reasons given by Donbryce.

Well, I am digging out a very old post but it pretty much fits my problem.

I am looking for a replacement for the steering box of my Mercedes 380sl and stumbled on a Box from an Mercedes W107 350SLC 1972 part no. 1164601001. Following the information of the ebay seller.

Now I am a bit confused because the no. starts with 116 which indicates the w116 gearbox I guess?! But the car it was salvaged from was a 350SLC...

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks in advance
Lucas

Edit:// Just crawled under my car and found this number on the steering gear box: 1164610401. Are those two similar?
