May be in mkt for SL model

I am nosing around thinking about picking up an SL model and do not want a V8. What model designation, from 1979 through about 1989 had the six cylinder?
thanks

I assume you are aware that all six-cylinder R107's are grey-market cars in the US. Make sure that the DOT/EPA conversion was done well. I read a few British magazines that offer classifieds for used sport cars and seem to recall that later six-cylinder R107's were badged as 300SL.

Those are your two choices. The 280SL was made from about '74-'85. The 300SL was made from about '85-'89. They are both grey market cars in the US. I believe the 300SL uses the M103 engine more commonly found in the 300E/SE/SEL.

Thanks ya'll. I doubt I will purchase a gray market car. There is a 88 560SL in the local paper I may take a look at. I have not owned a v8 since '72.

And then again--here's another perspective on gray-market vehicles:

I'm going to take a look at a 1990 300SL that is listed in the local paper. Not sure if this is the 103 or 104 engine. I have pretty much ruled out the 104. Messing with the W123's has gotten me slanted as far as how complicated an engine I am interested in. The 103's seem to be pretty straight forward.

I don't think the M103 engine was ever used in the R129 chassis. I'm pretty sure it's the M104 engine.
