eliminating catalytic converter on 450sl 1977
Since 1977 450sl dont require emmissions test here in NY (due to age) just safety tests, can the catalytic converter be eliminated and pipe sections placed instead? Size? source? or muffler shop? Will performance be affected adversely? Should improve Any advice appreciated. Abe g

If the car is exempt from smog emissions testing, I would remove the cat in a heart beat.
Removing the cat will increase horsepower, not reduce it. Timevalve sells stainless steel cats / exhaust specifically for Mercedes Benz vehicles. They have a great reputation. Do a search for Timevalve. Their website and tel# have been posted before.

While you're at it you may want to cut the belt to your air/smog pump. It's only for emissions purposes, and will gain you another couple of h.p.
