Exclamation Can I get cold defrost?!? Or am I crazy?

1996 SL500 when I use the front defroster it automatically outputs the hottest temperature! My 91 did this also so I am assuming it's just what all SL's do. When its 80 degrees out and raining do I really want to put the defroster on super hot?!? It makes it so that you have to put the defroster on for a couple of seconds, then turn it off and turn it back on again when you windows get steamed up again.

Someone please tell me there is a way to get cool defrost or to at least lower the temp so I can leave defrost on all the time like in any other car.

Set the air temperature you require, switch on the compressor (i.e. switch off EC economy mode) and set the system to Auto. Then select the upwards airflow setting. When your screen has demisted, select Auto once again.

Thanx much. I guess Im just used to other cars where you can actually push the "defrost" button and set the temperature to come out cold, warm, etc.

Every Mercedes I have known with climate control has gone to full heat, full fan, and compressor "on" on Defrost. This makes sense because the fog is caused by moisture-laden air condensing on colder glass. So the most effective way to clear it is with lots of warm, dry air.

You know it does make complete sense, Im just used to every "other" car that lets you put defrost in cold mode. I always thought the up arrow was for the center vents, DUH, my bad.

The wisdom of Mercedes engineers never ceases to amaze me!~

I had the same issue with my 94 E320.

Reading the manual prompted me to try a slightly different setting on my ACC. In rainy or really humid weather, I set the airflow to “bi-level” as opposed to ??? (the normal setting). I leave temp setting at the normal temp the fan speed on “auto.”

It works like a charm. No more annoying fogged windows or desert heat blast.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
