107 windshield/convertible top chrome and visors

Folks
I have a new chrome, actually brushed aluminum, windshield top piece and visors. The previous owned had a cheap top hoist and dropped the hard top a few times, the last 2-3 inches, while installing it on the car. So the brushed alluminum piece needs replacing. As well as the visors. I have both and would like any comments from anyone who has done this job.
I will document the job with photos. For anyones future reference.

From what I have learned, The mirror comes of with a twist. The A pillar trim comes off as described in the manual. With the mirror off the 2 screws can be removed that hold the interior upper trim with lights. You now have access to the brushed alluminum piece. As well as the visor mounts and wire.

Any other thoughts??????????

Dave

PS. Now if I could just fix the 1 dent at the back hardtop/softop attachment point

Do a search on floppy visor fixing, and you should find the procedure posted. Basically, it's removing the mirror, the clips holding the sun visor inner ends, and the trim pieces; the sun visor attachment will be revealed at that point. Don't know for sure how the metal header top attaches, but I'd think that the disassembly for the visor job would have you most of the way there.

Anyone happen to have a part number for the grommets in the brushed aluminum piece - in the holes where the fasteners for the top go through? Those grommets are trashed on our car...

best,

Dave

Dave (dmorrison) -- are the mirror covers on your old visors in good shape? I would be pleased to buy one or both of the covers from you -- the hinge legs of one of mine are broken and the cover falls off. I assume that one with the legs would just snap on. Let me know. I have been led to believe that the visors are sold as a unit, no spare parts (any one know for sure?).

Good luck on your project -- I look forward to seeing the pictures.

Daniel,

I believe you're right. My understanding is that the visors are sold as a unit. They're also very pricey...even used. I'm tempted to manufacture male and female replacement parts to retrofit to existing visors. Thoughts?

Dave,

The grommets are available at your local dealer and from what I understand they're very inexpensive. A call may be most beneficial.

Question: Is that top piece actually brushed aluminum or somehow plated. I want to polish mine up but dont want to do more harm thean good. Anyone with good results?

Rick -- Check this link out -- scroll about three-quarters of the way down, is the "visor clip" ($8.96) the female part?

Performance Products only sells the female piece.

The mirror doesn't twist out. Pull down HARD on it. It pops out. This thread has the most detailed instructions that I could find quickly:

107 floppy visor fix

Isn't the male piece the one that usually breaks?

Yes, the male piece is the one that usually breaks. It's part of the sunvisor itself.

You can get those plastic rings (grommets) from http://www.************************ . The part number is 77-004 and they sell for $2.45 each.

On removing the top stainless steel piece, I did it, and it turned out great except for one little, itty bitty thing: I cracked my windshield. There are clips that hold it under the thin strip of brightwork at the top of the windshield. Upon trying to release these, I slipped my screwdriver, and put a tiny notch in my windshield. Needless to say, a small windshield crack is similar in concept to being slightly pregnant...so be VERY careful.

This is also a really good time to replace the cowl moulding rubber, you will see why.

I can't beleive this - maybe there are two different parts involved. We were discussing the "clear plastic" round grommets around where the male parts of the convertible/hard top go into the sockets?
