Update on new wheels and tires

As I previuosly posted, I recently put on AMG 17" five spokes on the SL. I selected Continental Extreme Contact tires (at the suggestion of my friend and tire man). Well, they held the road like glue, but with the top down - way to noisey. I had them replaced with Yocohoma AVS db S2 (my original choice) and what a difference. The Yoco's are a great tire, handle nice, stick to the road and very quite. Now I love the 17" low profile look and ride of the SL.

Thanks for the info

Bruce,

I was planning to buy the Conti ExtremeContacts for my 1990 500SL because I've been happy with these tires on my '95 E420. I need to replace the worn out Dunlop SP8000's that are on there currently. Are the Yokohamas all season, ultra high performance, like the ExtremeContacts?

Continental Extreme Contacts

I have 16" Continental Extreme Contacts on my 93 SL 500 and they ride great. I had the top down last week(when the weather finally cooperated) and didn't sense any loud road noise at all.

They hold the road great. I use them in the Fall and early Spring, I then put on a set of 18"s for the warm weather months.

Yes they are all season tires. The Conti's are great tires. I went from 16" to AMG 17" 81/2" wide wheels and new tires. So when the tires made noise, which I wasn't used to, I wanted a little quieter tire. So far the Yoco's are good. Tire Rack rates the Conti Extrem Contact the 3rd best and the Yoco's the 4th best. The Yoco's seem to edge out on the ride confort and noise. I think they are both good choices. Some advise I got, (will leave the person nameless) stated that the I be happier with the Yoco's after explaining what I was experiencing. Although I would be happy to have the Extrem Conti's on the Jaguar XJ Sedan, which is driven in all kinds of weather.

BTW, That's one great looking SL, love the color.

So what was first, Bruce, do you recall? And what stopped you buying these?

Interesting to hear about the noise issue... my tire guys tell me that different road seal in different countries make it hard to test one set of tires over another.

Thanks. I inherited the Antera rims/Dunlop tires with the car when I bought it from a friend of mine last Dec. The rears are steamrollers: 17x10 . The fronts are 17x8.5. He patterned it after the AMG staggered setup. I really like the aggressive stance of the staggered setup. I'll definitely consider the Yokos when the time comes to buy the new tires.

Ken, I think you have an excellant point. Now, after all the switching and the Yoco are on, I do like the looks of the sidewall better than the Conti. The Conti seemed a little to busy with all the stuff on the sidewall. I think the 1st one at Tire Rack was a Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, I'm just not a fan of Pirelli , the 2nd was Mich Pilot A&S(way to pricey). So I settled for the Yoco's. I heard a lot of good things from people about the Yoc's. Time and driving will tell. BTW the 1st four choices were all very close in ratings.
