Nokian WR Tires
Hi,
I am looking at a set of Nokian WR tires. Seems they're the best of both worlds. Anyone care to comment? |

I'm still waffling between putting on a set of full blown winter tires and WR's. I figure WR's will work late fall and early spring when the chances of getting snow on any given day are still pretty good. Either way I'm going with Nokians. I used to have Michelin Pilot Alpins but those didn't work once the temps got down to 0F.

I've got a set of WRs on my '82 300td. I think the big improvement over the NRW line is a true all-season capability. A friend of mine had NRWs on his wife's Saab year-round, and they developed a noticeable imbalance condition when she drove the car during a stretch of 90-degree weather. I think he ended up scrapping the tires as a result.
I think the WRs are about equal to the NRWs in terms of snow traction. They're not as good as the Qs on ice or hardpack snow but fine in semi-packed snow or slush. I can't offer any first comparison to studded tires. They handle better than the Qs on dry pavement and wear much better -- the sipes on the Qs tend to wear quickly at the edge of the tread belt on the front tires if you drive a bit hard on dry pavement. I'd say you could drive on the WRs with confidence all winter long -- and all summer too, should you care to do so. Russ M |

I just bought a set for my 2001 Honda CRV. It handles great in rain. I look forward to the first snow storm in New England. It might be not as quiet as other all seasons tires. If you have the money and storage space, you should always go with snow tires. But it always depends on how much snow you will see.

I bought a set of WRs for my ML when it had about 30K on the odo. It now has about 54K and the tires are dang near as new. I've made countless trips to and from snow country and have nothing but praise. They are quiet, long lived, great traction and performance in wet, dry, snow, slush. No problems due to heat. We get temps down to the single digits but mostly in the 20s and upward.
My only complaint is is that the bongo-heads at Tire Rack don't sell them!
