Question Tire Brand ?

I need new front tires and have been calling around for prices etc. The three that I am looking at are Nankang at $130 total, Ohtsu Negotiator at $146 total or Toyo at $184 total. All have around 65K mileage rating. I doen't know anything about any of them so any input would be appreciated.
Thanks all

Are those all Jap tires? Never heard of 2 of them. Dont know anything about Toyo's. What about some nice Michelins or Continental. Those are OEM's.

You should be able to pick up a pair of Goodyear Assurance tires for close to the $ as the Toyos.

Here's my $.02 - never skimp on tires or brakes.

I have not had good experiences with Japanese tires. I had some Yokohamas on my first 300SD and wasn't impressed. The Toyos on my current 300SD make it handle like jello. The sidewalls are flimsy. I don't think they were designed with real cars in mind. Before my first Mercedes died, I had a set of Cooper tires put on it. I was very pleased with them.

You get what you pay for.

Toyo

Let me chime in on the Toyo Proxes TPT.

I had Michelin MXV4's and ran till bald. I just last week put a full set of the Toyo Proxes TPT in a 195-70-14. They ride quiet, hold corners at 70mph and are H rated. They grip well in wet weather. And the whole set was under $300. They have a mileage guarantee not a warranty.

Great set of tires. I actually like the improved ride and handling over the michelins and they were half the price.

Prorated I am sure.

I asked about Michelins, that added about $100 which I could spend on other stuff for the car. One shop that I called had the Goodyears at a OK price. Are they that much better?

Model of tire is prolly more important than brand.
You get what you pay for but the newcomers are willing to cut prices...Kumho and Hankook seem to offer equvalent tirres for a few bucks less.
Having said that....Brakes and tires are 2 places I do not try to save money.

Here's my advice:

Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds All Around. I know it will cut your budget tight, I was playing catch-up with the credit card for a couple months. But, safety has no price.

Read this thread and you'll understand what I meant (and still mean.)

Annoucing the world's best All Season!

It's not bull or market hype on what they say about these tires. I know, I have em. And if you have em too, you'll understand too.

My $.02

I have always run Michelins but the local dealer closed up shop and retired last year; nearest dealer is now 65 miles away. Last fall I put Goodyear Assurance "Triples" on all four corners of my 190D. I found that they handle well on dry, wet, slushy or snow covered roads. Tires now have covered almost 20K miles and show virtually no wear. I have driven hundreds of miles through 8"-12" of new snow on unplowed roads with no issues whatsoever. From my experience thus far I would have to rate them a "buy".

I concur with thte TripeTred comments above. I have them on my 1984 300SD, and they are excellent. I have the ComfortTreds on my Saab, and wish I would have spent the extra $50 for the TripleTreds.

Here's why I don't skimp on tires - in my experience, cheap tires do not grip as well. If you save $100 on tires but slide into another car in the rain, how much have you saved?

I put either Kumho or Toyo on my wife's Nissan 5 years ago. The next day I went back to the store and bought Goodyears. The tires had postively no grip once the streets were wet.

Here's a tip to save some money - go to Tirerack.com and print out the price for the TripleTreds. (Print the page that has the shipping charges, too). Go to the tire store and look at the tires, ask for the price. Tell them you like the tires, but ask if they can match Tire Rack's price. If they say yes, good job; if they balk about shipping, then show them the shipping charges. If they say yes, good job, if they baulk tell them you will buy them with the Road Hazard if they sell you the tires at the Tire Rack price. Most of the salesmen are graded on how many Road Hazards they sell, that will usually ice the cake.

I agree with Deerefanatic - if you have to melt the credit card, skip a meal, or forego a couple of nights out, then do it.

If you look at tire ratings you will see the triple treds have a 10 rating in all 3 catagories mentioned before. AFIK this is the only tire that has that high of a rating.

I didn't know they made them to fit my SD. I'm sure I asked. ANyway I went with the Firestone LS30's. They also have an H rating and handle really well.

And last you may want to search the "Wheels & Tires" forum for more info.

Funny you say that, Coopers are cheap. How about some Big O tires eh? I got me some no-names(don't know the name) on my car and they suck but they just won't wear out. Came on the car and they were brand new so I just left them on there.

I read on this forum a year or so ago that Yokohama Avid Touring were the favorite considering price/performance. I will buy either Michelins or Pirellis whenever I come to that point.
