De-chrome aluminum wheels.

I found a set of Volvo Gimini rims at the junk yard this weekend, they are as rare as 15 inch bunds. They are chromed and some of the chrome came off. I'm thinking of restoring them, would love to de-crome them and give them a silver metallic finish; paint or powder coat.

What would be the best approach?

you could try acid to see if it eats chrome,go to cheap Dollar store buy acid toilet bowl cleaner and check.I use it to remove black off aluminum same as Muratic Acid

This is not an easy process, and whatever strength acid you could buy retail won't do squat IMO.

The look for less from CICC Co. Chrome Wheels has the best price I've seen for stripping old chrome off. Some places charge quite a bit. I've wondered if they actually do "reverse plating" to accomplish it.

I have read mixed reports that this can't be done without harming the aluminum "a little" if done right, "a lot" if not, which is then (hopefully) filled in by replating with copper (fairly thick), then nickel, then chrome ("triple" chrome plating).

My local wheel repair friend media blasts off as much as they can get off and then they powdercoat over it. As long as the metal under the chrome isn't pitted, they will come out well.

I would grind off the damaged chrome and sand the remaining solid chrome with red scotch brite. Fill in the damage from the grinding and paint. A metal etch primer will help adhesion.
