Tire chain button on dash

Hi all,

I read through my manual which was little help.

Exactly what does the button on the dash labeled with tire chains do?

Initially I thought it would shut down the traction control, but it does not.

My car, as stated by others in a recent post, is a handfull in the snow and with the traction control not permitting me to really control my momentum it's a mess in the snow. Personally, for experienced, life long snow drivers like me, the traction control is more of a hinderance then a help.

Thanks,
Joel

PS> Obvious dedicated snow tires are a must.

It doesn't shut down ASR, rather it allows the tires to slip a bit prior to engaging ASR so that you don't get stuck in the snow.

Also, I believe it switches off automatically at about 37 MPH.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback.

Would be nice if I could shut it off. Must admit it does help with avoiding unintentional slides but really hinders when an intentional slide is needed. For example, when trying to carry momentum into and up my driveway.

Thanks again,
Joel

Wait till it engages when your tail kicks out getting out of a corner...then you'll really want an off switch!

Joel

I know there was/is a aftermarket ASR defeat switch for the early 500E's, and I thought there was a defeat switch for the early 300/400E cars, but I can't remember where I seen the info, I'll try to find it.

Thanks guys

Good to see I am not the only one who has run into or thought about this.

I am really surprised that MB did not set things up so I can shut it off when not needed.

True, there's been a number of occassions where I would have liked to have it off, particularly while driving in the snow. Funny but the traction control is of little if any help in the snow. I have driven front wheel drive cars with traction control and it really seemed to help.

I think it's a rear wheel drive, slide thing. Kinda like how some of the fastest grand prix motorcycle riders will slide the bike through the corner with power to the wheel.

Many times slide is helpfull in snow.

Joel

Will check the aftermarkets recommended.
