Mix tire brands in pairs?

My 1995 S320 (LWB i.e. very big and heavy) has Michelin MXV4 plus's on the front and regular (older) MXV4's on the rear. The rear tires are nearing the end of their life - fronts are fine.

I've been researching Tire-Rack and found that the Dunlop SP Sport A2 look like a good fit for my needs, and I like the price.

Is there any concern if I put new Dunlop SP Sport A2's on the rear, with the MXV4s on the front? I've heard you should replace tires 4 at a time, but I can't see doing it since the fronts are fine.

Thanks much,

should be fine

Lets put it this way, you should always replace in 4s if you can. But if its a waste of money because you have 2 that are fine...then just buy 2. Main thing to remembr as long as its the same pair on each axle (i.e. left and right match)

So I would suggest deff trying the Sport A2s.

I think you will find the the A2 a great tire for that car.

Dear Dave,

On my E500 I have Dunlop SP5000s in the rear and the same Michelins as you up front. This set up was for the identical reasons you articulated. (Unfortunately, I learned, through this forum, of the SO3's superior application to these vehicles, a little too late. The SO3s will certainly be my next tire for this vehicle.)

That being said, I also use the A2s on the 4matic and find them perfectly adequate (for non ski season months). The A2s represent an excellent perfromance-for-value ratio.

You may however want to ask Luke for his recommendation, as your application involves heavier loads. Perhaps the Z-rated, M+S SP5000, a less expensive tire than the Michelin, would make a better choice.

Regards,
Bob
