'00 Sl500

My 2000 SL500 has the Sport package with 18" 5 spoke AMG wheels and it's ride is extremely harsh - especially in Manhattan with all the "patched" potholes. I do have a set of brand new 16" factory rims from my recently sold 1995 SL500 that I was thinking of using to try to improve the ride quality with higher aspect ratio tires. Since Tire Rack has a few tires that they offer a 30 day trial period for, I figure it's worth a try...

Just a couple of questions:

Is it necessary to purchase new wheel bolts? Someone told me that the ones I presently have on the car will "hit" the brake disc...

Would the 17" rims from the CLK fit? I've seen some reasonable deals for "take-offs" and that might be a good compromise..

Thanks!

OEM 17s are probably the best bet

Why not these:

Cheap and stil OEM

with tires...but a reserve so far not met:

If you want tires seperatly...then try looking at the Continental ContiExtremeContacts. About $108 each from Tirerack. Tires have the highest survey results all across the board.

In a reply to your email, I would say its going to be tough. The reason being, any of the CLK, SLK, or C-class Staggered wheels won't fit your car while having the proper load rating. only the rears of these staggered setups would fit your car...but you need them at all 4.

Your best bet at that point is to call Tirerack and just pay the $350 each for the wheels then.

Also check out Bridgestone Turanzas. They have better ratings than the Contis in all categories except snow. 5 categories in the 9s, 3 in the high 8s and the snow was in the 7s.

Luke recommends these left and right.

need 245/45/17s for 17" wheels...

225/55/16s will have plenty of chioces to choose from though.

They come in 235/45/17s. The overall diameter difference from the 235s to the 244s is about .35". Not that much if ya ask me. Or not enough to keep me from buying the Turanzas. Just MHO.

Load Ratings

Load Ratings matter...

I pick the size first usually, then look for whats right.

Is there any question in your mind that the shocks might be warn out? Sometimes OEM shocks wear out very quickly.

'00 SL500 Harsh Ride

Taks for replying, Maddog. The car has 7,000 miles on it but I did check the shocks and they're functioning fine. I believe the harsh ride is inherent to the AMG Sport Package with the front 245/40x18" and the rear 275/25x18" Michelin Pilot Sports and the New York City (poorly) repaired (if we're lucky) potholes...
