Nice car, new engine, looks nice, but...c'mon! I think insanity has reached a new level.

Especially since winter is approaching and you gotta store the car for 6 months before you can even drive it with the top down.

I'll say people simply watched too many those car auction shows on Cable TV.

I own many hard to find collectables, ranging from $100-$10000. Do you think I will ever actually see those prices if I were to sell them? If I was trying to get 40 g's for a car, I think I would be a bit more aggressive than craigslist...

You can't remake these cars, and there are only so many left in existance. I completely agree craigs list probably isn't the place to sell a prized 190SL, but the guys price isn't as rediculous as many posters are making it out to be. There are serious collectors who search the globe for cars like this, and trust me, with the right advertising this car is probably worth 40 grand plus. Yes, I also own many collectors, and I am not one to criticize anyone for completely restoring a rare car and trying to get a nice price for it. My guess is that car will probably sell right around their asking price.

Quote:
It's a 190SL, they only made 25,881 units. In 1958 190SL production was 2722 total units. For comparison, they made almost 250 thousand R107 SL units. Basket case 190SL models go for around 15 thousand today. A top flight 190SL goes for at least 50 thousand. Astute Germans are buying as many as they can find here in the U.S., in any condition, and sending them back home. In Germany the 190SL had the nickname "Nitribit" because Rosemarie Nitribit drove one back in the day. These cars have a special meaning for many europeans, at the time owning any vehicle was a luxury, and some places in Europe imposed a 100% duty on imported vehicles, not to mention the waiting list one had be on in order to buy a Mercedes. For a 190SL, the wait was almost two years. American servicemen in Germany were able to bypass the wait list, to the chagrin of many Germans. I have no doubt that the seller will get 40k for his car, though CL isn't the place to sell a car like that. |

Not laughing at an asking price for a superb car. I agree these are rare and even more so, becoming a true higher end collectable. This car is not worth 40 grand. imho. I will say however that a 190 sl will be my next serious restoration.

It's nice from a collectible point of view, but not really a "usable" car. By today's standards, it's incredibly crude and slow. Still, I'd make room for it if I could find one in a barn!

The 190SL does 0-60 in 13 seconds, but, people didn't buy them for 0-60 times. It's a touring car, and was very ahead of it's time:
Dual heating and ventilation sytems Drum brakes with power booster, Alfin brake drums, dual wheel cylinders for each front wheel, in essence. Derived from the Gullwing brakes. Rear axle was a fully race tested design. Soft top operable with one hand, and it didn't leak. Adjustable bucket seats. Special luggage offered by special request. Hard top made the car a all season car. Roll up windows. Top speed was 105mph, this was also the cruising speed, the short stroke motor helped. Try doing that in a British car. The Porsche 356 Super A had a top speed of 109 mph. Fuel mileage was around 18 mpg. Unibody frame. Becker Mexico radio, FM tuning with signal seeking function. Reverse lights. Mechanicals straight from the 190 ponton series, used as taxi's all over Europe, and very reliable. Aluminum doors, trunk lid, and hood. All body seams filled with silver solder. Jeweled wind up clock placed in glove box door. Not bad for a car designed in the early fifties, and it was miles ahead of most anything else on the market at the time. Plus it was a lifetime purchase, try keeping a new SLK for more than tem years. |

I thank you for informing others why these are highly sought after and not just another old car.
From a usable stand point, this car isn't going to be an every day driver. Somebody would be crazy to think so, this is a car you drive for special events and simply enjoy looking at it in the garage. I would take this car over hundreds of new cars produced today, one must remember this car was made in the fifties! |

Uh, for more reference: at Startech two years ago, I went to a conference on restorations. A top flight job on a 190SL can very easily hit $100k .... or more. Not for the faint of heart or light of wallet.
