82 300D Turbo low miles on powertrain
82 300d Turbo
Bought car to convert to veg oil but instead ended up buying a newer 91 sdl that I converted. Wife is tired of my collection so the 82 has to go. So let me start with the good stuff. The car is a very strong runner, the guy I bought it from told me the engine was rebuilt and had a hundred thousand on it and the transmission had less than 60 thousand off a rebuild. The problem with it was that it had a bad rear end. I bought it and swapped the rear end out as well as the rear drive axles out of another 82 300d. Good news as the rest of the car has more than 300,000 on it and old CV joints were in questionable shape. The rear end I swapped in had a little over a hundred thousand and was in great shape. The bad news being that it was out of a 300d and not a turbo so the rear end seems to be a bit lower geared. I was cruising on the interstate at 75 turning around 3000 rpm with the old one, this one is a bit higher. The engine starts right up when I charge to battery, which is bad but the alternator checks out as I tested that. Also replaced the odometer which no longer worked from the donor 300d. Replaced the front shocks as well and put in a dash that was in better shape than the old one. Turns out the passenger side shock was bad because the tie rod ends were worn and caused the top side of the tire to toe in and rub on the shock. So these will need replaced as well, perhaps 40 a piece. Has a vacuum leak that I never tracked down so car shifts hard and won't turn off. However if you pull up on the rear driver side door lock it pops right out with a broken piece of tubing attached so their is your leak ready for the fixing. If their are more leaks I have not looked. The last real thing that is wrong with this car is that while I was trying to fix the dash lights for night (they do not work, perhaps rheostat) suddenly the gas gauge started fluctuating and goes to full. Then the thermostat jumps around all crazy then pegs itself at full. This happens after it has warmed up. Of course the car is not hot and has never moved past 80c when gauge was working and my gas tank is not magically full, for if this is the case it would be the best car ever. I was told it was probably a bad ground and after hrs of poking around I could not find one. I am however electrically challenged and really suspect it is just a bad battery as they are responsible for much electrickery. A man who was more ambitious would drop a new battery in post haste and test this however I have been procrastinating mostly because I suspect this will fix the problem and then I won't want to sell the car. It is one of my favorite cars and a blast to drive. Clear coat is in rough shape and is pealing. Dent on lower front part of passenger side fender. Also one higher up from jack I believe. Not super terrible to the non discriminatory eye. Please note in pics. I believe that is pretty much all the negatives on the car. The other one being is that I live in Bozeman MT. which is not really near anybody. Car comes with 4 extra rims and plenty of other odds and ends extras. Car has 300 plus miles. Drivetrane has less than 150,000 miles, as I was told. Sorry I have no proof, but I will stake my name to it and buy it back if you find otherwise. Front seats are not original they are out of a Cessna aircraft. At first I was going to swap them out but they proved to be so much more damn comfortable than the originals I kept them. I think I will ask 950.00 for this car. If I had gotten around to fixing its problems it would be a bit more. I am sure the car would be quite reliable with a new battery but if you were planning on driving it back across the country I would not guarantee it without a good once over from a mechanic. now lets see if I can get this pic posting to work? two dents on that right front fender Bobblehead Jesus not included though he does ward off tailgaters. A little crack on that headlight plastic cover their on the left. K and N filter in their as well, stripped off egr crap to clean up vacuum lines. They will come with it however. One crack on this dash, old one was hashed. Thats a nice little disk player tucked in their as well. window has numerous cracks. |
