Asking price: $7,900 or best offer (reduced price -11/8/09) Up for sale is my 1986 420sel. The reason I am selling it is I really want to purchase a 2001 750iL. I know I am on the Mercedes forum so, please do not hate me.  Actually, I like my Benz a lot, just want something different. I am in charge of service and parts for smart USA and have always been a big fan of Mercedes and BMW vehicles. The vehicle is currently in our retail lot and is advertised through our retail center – smart center Bloomfield. Now for the details.Basic Stats

I am the second owner. The prior owner was an elderly couple in southern Indiana. They vehicle was sold, wound up in auction and eventually made its way to a used car dealer in northern Indiana. This is where I purchased the vehicle. I purchased the vehicle with 89,770 miles. The vehicle currently has 93,200 miles. Vehicle Condition Overall this vehicle is in fine condition with a clean title, CARFAX and Experian AutoCheck. The Experian AutoCheck was run when I bought the car in November 2007. The Car Fax was run October 2009. This vehicle is a second car and is rarely driven, no snow, rarely used in rain and garage kept. The car has been very reliable. The condition of the car is as follows: Wheels/tires: The tires are Michelin MXV with good tread, however, they were on the car when I bought it and are probably due for replacement more for age then anything. They do not vibrate but they are a bit noisy suggesting that the rubber is aging. The original spare tire and wheel is in the car and it appears to have never been used. The wheels are in good condition. Paint The paint is in beautiful original condition. It appears this car has not had any bodywork. (Vehicle history reports confirm this) and this was one of the main reasons I bought this car. The finish is not oxidized anywhere and shines beautifully. There is an area the size of a grapefruit on the right front fender that appears to have some sort of environmental damage. The damage looks like heavy water spots but is actually etching into the clear coat. Otherwise, there is the normal, but light amount of chips from road blast that you can not see from 4ft away. Exterior Sheet metal – The body is in nice condition. There are a few “normal” for its age dings. There isn’t any rust anywhere including underneath or otherwise less obvious areas. The drivers side door exterior skin has a wave in the sheet metal that was there before I bought the car. This appears to have been something the prior owner did in a parking lot. The doors close perfectly and all panels are perfectly aligned. There is no wind or water leaks. All seals are in good condition and perform properly Trim – The trim is in nearly perfect condition. The left rear door trim (at bottom of window) is starting to get cloudy, but otherwise all other trim shines beautifully. Glass – The glass is in nice condition. There are no chips, cracks, delamination, or clouding whatsoever. Interior The dashboard has no cracks or fading. The seats are in excellent condition with the drivers seat showing a bit of light wear on the outer seat back wing. Seats function perfectly. Carpets are clean with no visible wear. The headliner is in great condition. The wood is shiny with no unusual scratches or wear. The wood around the shifter has a stress crack in the clear coat. There are no unusual odors. HVAC There are no issues with HVAC system, as it blows warm when heat is desired, cold when cooling is desired. Auto and manual functions work as designed. Electrical Analog clock in the instrument cluster does not operate. All other features work flawlessly. Original radio still works perfectly. Suspension No issues. Vehicle drives straight. Handling is as designed and car rides fine. Brakes operate as designed. Powertrain The engine, transmission, and rear differential function well. The engine starts reliably and driveability is great. Transmission shifts good and does not slip. Fluid is clean. There are no unusual noises. Repairs performed during my ownership: 2007 Replaced timing chain upper guide rails Replaced timing chain tensioner and guide rail Timing Chain checked for stretch. Chain is in spec. Replaced cam oilers Major tune-up Replaced belts Replaced idler pulley Replaced all fluids with synthetics Replaced all filters. Note: When the valve covers were removed the engine was clean inside and the camshafts were inspected for wear. This is a good indication that the prior owner serviced the vehicle properly. I have pictures. 2008 Changed Oil and Filter. New Battery New Wiper Blade Inserts 2009 Changed Oil and Filter Replaced Rear Sway Bar End Links Replaced Antenna Mast Replaced Driveshaft Flex Discs Feel free to ask any questions and thanks for your interest. Updated with addtional repairs
Hi Folks,
I updated the original post with some repairs I performed this weekend. I replaced the rear sway bar end links, the driveshaft flex discs as preventative maintenance and replaced the antenna mast. Regards, Joe
