FS: 1982 240D - 79K miles - Pasadena, CA

Please see the following threads about my 240D for sale.

1982 240D -- New Addition

Have to sell 1 --- which one?

Here is a link to just the pictures.

I took these without cleaning it, just after bringing her home on a gloomy day. I will take some pictures under the hood and of anything else people want to see on Monday because I left my camera at work. You are welcome to come see and drive the vehicle anytime. I MAY be able to borrow a camera and get some more pictures up this weekend.

I'm asking 3K, and it will be put on E-bay early next week if no interest here on the forum. I'd like it to go to a fellow forum member. I feel the price is fair. The two other threads should answer some questions about the car, but fire away and I will answer as best I can. It is a nice W123. My name is Randy and I can be reached at (909)342-8879.

Drove the car to Chino today....about 35 miles. Car ran great....no problems cruising at 70-75 mph.

I'm keeping it at my mothers home to avoid any more tickets here in Pasadena. Turned over 80,000 miles on the drive. I had the title changed to my name, so I am waiting on the new title to be sent to me before putting it on e-bay.

Still here...not in a hurry to sell.

Purchased in 1982 here in Pasadena, CA. I'm not too keen on the color, but I couldn't pass up the deal. A lady that I see several times a year through my job drove to my work one day in the car a couple of years ago. I told her I liked the old Mercedes diesels, and to let me know when she wants to get rid of it. She said it was her mothers car, and she has had it since it was new. The mother is in her 80's now and can't drive it anymore. Well, the time came a few weeks ago, and I purchased it today.

It does have a salvaged title. It does have some blowby which sprays oil. It looks like the cloth fuel lines are leaking, and there is some shaking at idle, but everything works. Manual windows and AC (not ICE cold, although the daughter told me she spent a few hundred dollars a few years ago to fix it). The steering and suspension is nice and tight, tranny shifts nice and firm, no odd noises. Drives great. A perfect around town car. I can't tell that it has been in an accident serious enough to cause it to be slavaged. The lady told me her mother always had it serviced at Rusnack Mercedes. I called Rusnack yesterday and gave them the vin. They told me it looks like the oil was always changed, and that the last major service was performed there in 2004. The daughter says this seems right as she transfered the car to herself ~2004. She has no records from 2004 to present---just a glow plug repair in 2006 and a new battery from last week. They didn't really even want to tell me that. I'm going to drive down and see if they can print me out the service records they have. Maintenece book is stamped through 1996 and 64K miles.
Here is a link to some pictures.

Some of the Maintenance book stamps:

14,210 -- 1984
28,462 -- 1986
32,879 -- 1987
47,654 -- 1990
58,299 -- 1993
64,480 -- 1996

Rusnack reports ~70,000 in 2004.

That color yellow looks fantastic on W123 chassis cars.

Thanks Paul. Surprised at the lack of interest (none) for a low-mileage, non-pinkamino interior, California rust free 240D for a reasonable price.

No interest because the price is high. Fix some of the interior flaws, clean, remove the paint oxidation, and you will be able to get that for it.

Thanks for the input Johnathan.

Interior flaws? Like what?

I'll accept that the paint is a bit oxidized, but it's not bad. I figured it was the salvaged title that was causing the lack of interest.

One reason for difficulty in selling might be the thread where you said you paid $1K for it. Unless you have made some significant repairs to justify the tripling of the price, getting $3K might seem a little steep to anyone who reads the threads. Just a thought.

I think the salvaged title is another deterrent to getting top dollar.

Mainly just glue down the wood, and clean/get rid of the front floor mats.

For the paint, I use a rotary buffer with a foam polishing pad, and 3M Finesse-it II. Works great on the old single-stage MB paint!

I have bought and sold many of these cars. Missed the part about the title...that will be a deterrent, but not as bad as most would have you think.

I did indeed pay $1000 for it, but the car was never advertised anywhere for sale. It just happens that I was in the right place at the right time. I'm not trying to hide anything. I have been a member here for ~8 years. I already own an e420 and a 300SD. I didn't need the car, but how could I NOT buy it for $1000? I didn't think she was going to accept my offer, but here we are. I now own a nice 240D. My plan is to take the money from this sale and sink it into my 300SD, which I'm already in way too much for (You can read about it on here, too.). I just like the SD more and I fit in it better. It shouldn't matter what I bought it for, but I appreciate the comments. This car is NOT a $1000 car that I am trying to pawn off on someone for triple the price.
