280se Coupe Wanted
Hi All,
I'm looking for a nice - not concours, but very presentable and mechanically sorted - 280se Coupe. Prefer a 3.5, but very open to the right 6 cylinder car. Please let me know if you might have any leads on a vehicle, thanks! Please reply to the thread first to let me know if you are sending a PM, thanks. Best, Joel |

Joel,
I think these are the epitome of MB. I would like to own one some day also. Good luck on your search.

Thanks, I totally agree about the iconic quality of these coupes... have missed at least 3 nice ones to faster eyes in the past couple of months, so thought I'd get creative and see if I might be able to find the right car before it hits Hemmings:-) The overpriced ones sit around forever, but when priced well they go pretty quickly.

What is your budget?
Location? http://www.copleymotorcars.com/mercedes_benz5_55.5vo843.html (At a dealer that's notorious for overpricing it's cars) http://www.hemmings.com might be a good place to look.

Yes, that one is a stunner at Copley... but looking for a nice driver rather than concours (and even then the best coupes should go for under 50K). Schmitt also has a beauty in Choclate Brown on eBay right now for $47 that could win Pebble Beach.
I'd like to pay between $25-40K, which is very reasonable for the market... 25-30 I've seen some very nice '68s and 69's with 6 cylinders, and $35-ish should buy a very well sorted 3.5 with less than perfect cosmetics. The coupes are starting to appreciate in the past few years but still relatively soft compared to the cabriolets. On the other hand they are also tough to find in good shape, so many rusty junkers out there. If you have the money you can buy beautiful convertibles all day long, I guess restorers have found it profitable to put the effort into them but less frequently the hard tops. Best, Joel |

It was the beauty of my 69 coupe which drew me in to this Mercedes hobby . I wasn't shopping for a car when I first spotted it. Now I have 5 Mercedes Benzes. 3 euro coupes & two euro w123 wagons.

Hmm, guess I can make them an offer, you never know... what I'm finding is that overseas money is buying all the nice ones up, these all seem to be heading back to Germany and similar, very sad for the US collector. Most of the dealers are willing to hold out for the call from overseas ad arrange to put it on a boat, of 10 cars I've called on recently at least 7 have gone that way, full asking price or close.
