James,

I pulled a CC amp from a 1982 W123 300D for my 1983 300SD to see if the amp was the cause of my non-functioning cruise control. I connected the amp and no change. I ran 12v between pins 6 and 7 on my CC actuator and all I got was a click. It didn't sound like a motor spinning or anything. What are your suggestions? Am I looking at a bad actuator?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

eatont9999,

The 300D and the 300SD cruise amps are not interchangeable. I had someone accidentally send me a 300SD part numbered unit. I repaired it and tested it and when it got back to him it performed poorly and didnt work. His car was a 300TD which uses the same amplifier as the 300D.

So when you swapped them there was a small chance it would work but work abnormally. Thats what his did, then it stopped working all together. I swapped units with him, giving him the proper one for his car.

Connecting pins 6,7 should give you an audible click. Pins 6,7 are the solenoid which connects the motor inside the actuator to the actuator's arm.

To test the motor inside the actuator, you need to check current flowing to the connections of another set of pins. See this thread here:
Inside the box: VDO Cruise Control Actuator

I believe you might be looking at a bad amplifier, rather than the actuator.

Once you conduct the test in the above link and you're interested I can repair that amplifier for you at my normal service fee of $50+$6 for return shipping.

Let me know if you need any help or have any questions!
Hope this helps!

-Kris

Yeah, I kinda figured it was incompatible. CC has not worked in this car since I bought it. If I move the CC lever to set/accelerate, it does absolutely nothing and never has.

My other question to you is what input signals does the CC amp need to function? I know from general knowledge that some units require a tach and speed input. Not sure about these, though. My tach started working, at its leasure, after I replaced the tach amp. During tests, I made sure the tach was functioning properly. My speedometer is off because I think it came from a gas car at some point but that shouldn't effect the speed signal to my knowledge.

I'll test some more tomorrow.

The CC amp uses the speedometer signal generated in the tailshaft of the transmission. In the 126 SD the signal is all electronic once it leaves the tai-shaft. The inductive pickup is located there. In the 123/124/201 the tail-shaft drives a cable that physically spins the speedometer. The inductive or hall-effect pick up is on the back of the speedometer cluster.

The CC has inputs from the stalk as well as connections to the actuator. Other than that, it picks up at the brake light switch that is at the brake pedal. This is used to dis-engage the CC system.

You can verify that all these inputs are valid with a multimeter, see this post:
FS: Cruise Control Amplifiers (Repaired)

If all these measure up and the actuator test passes, then all signs point to the amplifier being the culprit.

As to your speedo not reading correctly, you are correct. The speedo is to be matched with the differential gearing I believe. If you look on an SD speedo cluster you should say K=10240. Where as a V8 (420SEL) would have something like K=8075. This is the impulses per kilometer or mile I forget which.

I knew my speedometer was not correct from the beginning. 160MPH seemed just a little too optimistic to me. But still, I would assume the signal for 60MPH would be going to the CC amp even if the speedometer reads 80MPH, so it should work.

I'll PM you once I do more testing and maybe we can work something out.

As far as I'm aware you're correct. The cc amp wouldn't actually care if it was getting 60 or 80 mph. It would just be concerned with maintaining that same point. The speed signal is actually a square wave. The CC unit uses the frequency of that wave as its set point. So if you're doing 131 Hz, the CC will keep the incoming signal at 131 Hz. If you dip below, it'll tap the actuator forward and try to bring it back up. If you go above it'll release the actuator and let the engine/car naturally decelerate back to 131 Hz.

Yes, Let me know how the testing goes, if you need any help or have any questions, please post up. This stuff is always fun and interesting for me.

Do you still have a 002 545 16 32?
I would like buy one, and I'd also like to buy a set of the caps to try fixing my old one.

I built a test board with 3 relays that plugs into the amp connector and makes the actuator behave like a throttle control. It works well, but obviously does not regulate the speed, it just holds the throttle where you set it. It lets you test the actuator and the control stalk. I can post the schematic if anyone is interested.

I do still have it. In fact I was just about to update my various threads with inventory numbers. Drop me an email (jamesdean59@gmail.com or pm on here and we can go from there.

James,

I sent you an email. I've actually got two or three 300SD compatible units in stock ready to ship out. See my email.
