Harmonic Balancer change
Changing the harmonic balancer this weekend and have a few questions.
The car is a 99 ml320 that is a very early 99, with 105k on it. 1. Do i need to remove the fan? If i do, and i think i do to get the balancer holder tool on, how do i remove it? Do i remove the bolt around the outer edge of the fan on the outside or does it remove from the pully some how? 2. When i torque the new bolt i am going to go 250ft/lbs on my torque wrench and then put the breaker bar on and pull it anothre 95 degrees. Is this the right thing? Thanks. |

On the fan removal (which I am unsure if it's neccesary, but removing the fan and shroud sure would seem to make it easier) there is a tool that holds the fan pulley from rotating, it slips over 3 of the 4 small allen head bolts. Once this is in place, a large (special tool) wrench is used to rotate the large "hex" section of the fan.
Unsure on balancer torque spec., don't remember an angle torque, but could be wrong. Gilly

I removed the fan when doing this job. I didn't have the tool to hold the fan, but it would have made the job easier.
Make sure you have the tool to hold the balancer in place, or you'll have he!l trying to remove it, nevermind torquing the new bolt with any accuracy. My dealer told me 400 ft-lbs, but he said his techs have regular 250 ft-lb torque wrenches too. They go to 250 and add a tug. 95 degrees seems like way too much. Some blue Loctite couldn't hurt.

400ft/lbs sounds more like it. Where I worked they bought this 4ft long torque wrench from MB to be able to torque it properly. Was actually a better deal from MB than to get one from one of the "professional grade" tool guys that drive around in trucks. May have been better to try one of the cut-rate tool places (Harbor Freight or like that, never looked), it's not like it's in constant use.

job done
finished the job, it was super easy in a one to five smashed finger scale with one being adding windshield cleaning fluid and five being rebuilding an engine, this project rates a 1.5. Pretty simple with the right tools, I'll do a write up in a day or two.
