The ML not being like the MB's of old does not have a filter for the power steering fluid, at least as far as I could tell. I changed my fluid by draining the old when I changed out the power steering return line for a new one. I don't think there is a recommended change inteval for power steering fluid. I guess it's supposed to last forever like the auto gearbox oil.

I changed it last night. Used a topsider to suck out the oil from reservoir - about 1 quart. Replaced it with new fluid - (now $9 / quart) And the high pitch whine at the ends is gone.
