That all depends how much you are willing to spend.

The best way to get more power is to up-grade to a ML430 or ML500

RENNtech

Well, I am an installer/dealer of RENNtech go-fast-look-good upgrades. Real HP is not cheap, therefore:

ML 320,
Stock Horsepower 215 @ 5,700 RPM
Stock Torque 233 lb-ft @ 3,000-4,600 RPM

Install a Carbon Fiber Airbox and ECU Upgrade:
After:

Horsepower Gain 20 Torque Gain 20 lb-ft
Total Horsepower 235 @ 5,700 RPM
Total Torque 253 lb-ft @ 3,000-4,600 RPM

This will be about $2,895.00 plus shipping. You will need to remove your ECU and mail it in to get reprogrammed. If you reside within our coverage area, I can come out, remove your ECU, have it reporgrammed and then reinstall it with the new Carbon Fiber Airbox.

Other wise, I can email you the removal instructions for the ECU, you mail it in, and it will get sent back to you, reporgrammed and along with the Carbon Fiber Air Box (air box is a simple installation).

RENNtech offers good exhaust upgrades, but are you able to handle a DYI for the exhaust installation? If so, I can email you a quote to have a sport muffler system mailed out to you.

Happy Motoring!

The ECU upgrade is just a reporgramming of your original ECU, and it will not affect the general operation of it. The air box is not a K&N filter, the box and filter are tuned to meet the ECU upgrade. Preatty straight forward. The exhaust kit is a muffler and resonator.

If you are looking for real performance, you can do a camshaft upgrade, but that would only make your ML 320 a (slightly good) ML 430.

The airbox and ECU is as far as I would go with the performance on the ML 320. Now if it was a 430 or 55, well, then I would go with the RENNtech Kompressor kit (that will be a kick in the pants upgrade!).

Sounds like you are looking for bargain HP, well, with a MB, especially the ML 320 , bargain does not exist. The ECU upgrade is what I recommend, anything more than that is, well, uncalled for, you are better off saving up for a used 2000 ML 430 or 55 AMG (now upgrading one of these v-8's will be fun!)

Happy Motoring!

Have you tried shifting the gears to take advantage of the powerband? The ML320 is not a sports car or a dragster but it has plenty of pep for its heft. When in town, I always drive in "4" instead of "D" and when merging into freeways, I'll accelerate in "4" and making sure I floor the pedal so that I engage the "magic" button behind the pedal before upshifting to "D" when I achieve my desired speed. I also downshift to "4" if I need more passing power. Since the torque curve is pretty flat from 2k-4.5K, you want to get there as soon as possible.

I think he's referring to the kickdown switch as the magic button.
